“Most Pro-Life State” Revealed

Americans United for Life (AUL) announced the release of its Life List 2025 State Rankings, naming Arkansas the “most pro-life state in America for the fifth year in a row.”

“The annual ‘Life List’ ranks all 50 states based on their efforts to protect life from conception to natural death. The worst states include Vermont, New Jersey, and Oregon,” a press release from AUL stated.

“Arkansas’s consistent leadership is a testament to its unwavering commitment to protecting life,” said Bradley Kehr, Government Affairs Director of AUL.

“With nine new life-protecting laws enacted, Arkansas has set a powerful example for states across the nation. We are also encouraged by the momentum in states like North Carolina and Florida, which have demonstrated significant progress in safeguarding women and preborn children. AUL will continue to serve legislatures across the country to secure the most impactful pro-life protections possible,” Kehr added.

Per AUL:

This past legislative session, the pro-life movement faced many challenges including pro-abortion ballot initiatives and legislation targeting pregnancy resource centers. However, several states stood firm in their courageous defense and advocacy for life. For the fifth year in a row, Arkansas is at the top of the Life List as the most pro-life state in America. Continuing in its momentum from last year, Louisiana comes in second after enacting numerous life-affirming laws, including a law that protects unsuspecting pregnant women from the fraudulent provision of chemical abortion drugs. Tennessee secured its spot as the biggest mover on the Life List, advancing from 13th to 6th. The state enacted strong protections against abortion trafficking of minors and allocated funds to pregnancy resource centers. Kentucky also jumped five spots to 9th.

Unfortunately, Alabama joined Connecticut with the biggest drop of six spots when it declined to protect life in the assisted reproductive technologies space. Alabama dropped from 10th to 16th.

From The Christian Post:

Jerry Cox, founder and president of the Arkansas Family Council, released a statement Monday celebrating the news that AUL had given his state such a distinction.

“More than a decade ago, Family Council joined with Arkansas Right to Life and others in setting out to make Arkansas the most pro-life state in America. By working together, we have done that,” wrote Cox.

“Keeping Arkansas the most pro-life state will take constant effort. As a pro-life leader, Arkansas has done important work, but we can’t stop. There is more pro-life work to do. We look forward to continuing that work when the Arkansas Legislature convenes next week.”

Last August, the Arkansas Supreme Court ruled 4-3 against a petition by Arkansans for Limited Government for a referendum on the November ballot that, if passed, would have enshrined abortion under certain circumstances as a state constitutional right.

Justice Rhonda Wood authored the majority opinion, concluding that “the petitioners failed to comply with the statutory filing requirements for paid canvassers” and thus did not legitimately collect enough signatures for the initiative.

“That statute was inapplicable to volunteer canvassers. As such, we ordered [Arkansas Secretary of State John Thurston] to count the signatures from volunteer canvassers, but we do not order him to count the signatures from paid canvassers,” Wood wrote.

“Because the number of the initial count of signatures fails to meet the facial validity threshold required by law, we deny further relief.”
