President Trump on Sunday morning said special counsel Jack Smith “accomplished nothing” and destroyed the lives of “many people and families.”
Trump’s statement follows Smith’s resignation from the Justice Department.
"The Stench of Deranged Jack Smith and his thugs is GONE. They were sent packing after spending over $100,000,000, destroying the lives of many people and families, who will never be the same again," Trump said.
"Deranged Jack accomplished nothing, except to show what complete losers my political opponents are!!!" he added.
"Deranged Jack Smith was fired today by the DOJ. He is a disgrace to himself, his family, and his Country. After spending over $100,000,000 on the Witch Hunt against TRUMP, he left town empty handed!" Trump added in another post.
Fox News reports:
Smith was appointed by Attorney General Merrick Garland in November 2022 to investigate Trump's role in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol riot and his mishandling of classified documents.
Smith previously served as acting U.S. attorney for the Middle District of Tennessee in 2017 during Trump's first administration.
The resignation comes ahead of the release of Smith's report on the case related to Trump's role in the attack on the Capitol. A recent court filing revealed that Garland plans to release the report soon, possibly before Trump takes office next week.
"As I have made clear regarding every Special Counsel who has served since I took office, I am committed to making as much of the Special Counsel's report public as possible, consistent with legal requirements and Department policy," Garland wrote in a recent letter to House Judiciary Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, and ranking member Jamie Raskin, D-Md.
"Jack Smith weaponized our justice system for politics. Jack Smith’s un-American lawfare FAILED. And today, Jack Smith has resigned in DISGRACE. This travesty must NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN," Rep. Byron Donalds (R-FL) said.

"Confirming he is purely political, Jack Smith just resigned. He should be criminally investigated," Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton commented.

Per CNBC:
DOJ officials urged Cannon not to extend an order she issued last week, which is temporarily blocking the agency from releasing Smith’s investigation into Trump’s interference in the 2020 election results.
ADVERTISEMENTTrump’s former co-defendants in another criminal case asked Cannon to extend her order, and are trying to keep Garland from releasing a portion of Smith’s report to members of Congress.
The DOJ filed an emergency motion late Friday asking a federal appeals court to reverse the order, which would allow for the swift release of Smith’s report.
Smith had filed two criminal cases against Trump.
One, in federal court in Washington, D.C., charged with crimes related to his attempt to overturn his loss in the 2020 election to President Joe Biden.
In the other case, which Cannon presided over, Trump was charged with retaining classified government records at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida after leaving the White House in January 2017, and with his efforts to prevent officials from recovering those documents.
