ABC News Host on Alvin Bragg Case: “Why is this even being prosecuted?”

Oh how quickly the tide is turning!

All the rats fleeing the ships, trying to find exits before the music stops on January 20th.

ABC News host Jon Karl seemed to suggest that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg’s “hush money” case against President-elect Donald Trump was both unnecessary and weak. Speaking at a Politics and Prose book event in Washington, D.C., Karl described the charges as “tawdry” and questioned the rationale behind pursuing the case at all.

While Trump faced criminal charges in four separate cases — two initiated by the Biden Department of Justice — Bragg’s “hush money” case remains the only one that advanced to trial. Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis’ racketeering case against Trump and his allies has stalled, as Willis herself is under investigation for alleged misconduct. Similarly, U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon dismissed Special Counsel Jack Smith’s case regarding Trump’s handling of classified documents earlier in the year. Judge Cannon’s ruling also highlighted constitutional concerns about Smith’s appointment. Following Trump’s November victory, Smith decided to “wind down” his separate case linked to challenges to the 2020 election.

On Friday, Karl joined Tim Heaphy, author of a book offering a sensational analysis of the January 6 Capitol protests, for a discussion at a Washington, D.C., bookstore. During their conversation, Karl commented on the legal battles involving Trump, describing Bragg’s case as convoluted and inaccessible to the average person. He explained, “Ultimately, the only criminal trial that took place involving the past and future president was the one in New York. It’s a pretty complex case about payments made by his fixer and lawyer to a porn actress. Falsifying records, by itself, doesn’t rise to the level of a felony.” Karl also pointed out that Bragg relied on debatable legal arguments to justify elevating the charges to felony status. “I mean, it’s just this messy, tawdry situation, and you think, that’s the case he went to trial for?” he remarked.

Karl acknowledged that many might question the legitimacy of Bragg’s efforts, stating, “A fair observer could look at that New York case and say, why is this even being prosecuted?”
