California Gov. Gavin Newsom invited President Trump to The Golden State to survey the damage caused by the destructive fires.
“@realDonaldTrump, as you prepare to assume the presidency once more, I invite you to come to California,” Newsom said.
“The hundreds of thousands of Americans – displaced from their homes and fearful for the future – deserve to see us all working together in their best interests, not politicizing a human tragedy and spreading disinformation from the sidelines,” he added.

From Cal Matters:
Since Tuesday, when a series of fires driven by hurricane-force winds began breaking out across the Los Angeles region, Trump has repeatedly blasted Newsom and other California leaders online for mismanaging the state’s water and called on “Newscum” to resign. Frustrations that some fire hydrants ran dry as crews battled a massive blaze in the Pacific Palisades — a failure that Newsom on Friday ordered the state to investigate — has underpinned much of the criticism.
ADVERTISEMENTThe hostile rhetoric has raised fears that Trump may follow through on earlier threats to withhold disaster aid from California unless the state overhauls its water policy by allowing more supply to flow south to Central Valley farmers and Southern California. That would make it substantially more costly for the state to recover from the Los Angeles fires, which are already estimated to have caused economic losses of more than $50 billion.
Former Trump administration officials told Politico last fall that the president-elect was flagrantly political with disaster funding during his first term. Trump reportedly withheld approval for aid related to California’s 2018 wildfires because of the state’s Democratic leanings, until aides showed him that many of the residents of the affected areas had voted for him.
On the campaign trail last year, he vowed that if the governor didn’t agree to divert more money to farmers, “we won’t give him money to put out all his fires.”
“Governor Gavin Newscum refused to sign the water restoration declaration put before him that would have allowed millions of gallons of water, from excess rain and snow melt from the North, to flow daily into many parts of California, including the areas that are currently burning in a virtually apocalyptic way,” Trump said on Truth Social.
“He wanted to protect an essentially worthless fish called a smelt, by giving it less water (it didn’t work!), but didn’t care about the people of California. Now the ultimate price is being paid. I will demand that this incompetent governor allow beautiful, clean, fresh water to FLOW INTO CALIFORNIA! He is the blame for this. On top of it all, no water for fire hydrants, not firefighting planes. A true disaster!” he added.
Trump also said Newsom “should resign” as governor.
“One of the best and most beautiful parts of the United States of America is burning down to the ground. It’s ashes, and Gavin Newscum should resign. This is all his fault!!!” Trump said.
“Fire is spreading rapidly for 3 days — ZERO CONTAINMENT. Nobody has ever seen such failed numbers before! Gross incompetence by Gavin Newscum and Karen Bass….And Biden’s FEMA has no money — all wasted on the Green New Scam! L.A. is a total wipeout!!!” he added.
Per CBS News:
The two largest and most destructive LA wildfires — the Eaton Fire just outside Pasadena and the Palisades Fire in the coastal community of Pacific Palisades — have killed at least 11 people and destroyed thousands of structures. More than 150,000 people fled their homes this week and even more evacuations were issued Friday night in the Palisades Fire as the flames spread further.
Newsom’s letter references Trump’s 2018 visit to California after the Camp Fire in the Northern California town of Paradise became the deadliest wildfire in California history. During the same visit, the pair surveyed the widespread destruction of the Woolsey Fire in Malibu, part of the same area of Los Angeles County where the Palisades Fire ripped through.
So far, the Eaton and Palisades fires have already become among the most destructive in state history.
“Now, California is again facing one of the most destructive fires in our history,” Newsom’s letter reads.
He goes on to write that several LA wildfires, carried by hurricane-force gusts, exploded in size “even in the face of Herculean work by legions of experienced firefighters” — sending thousands fleeing before devastating entire communities.
“The loss and devastation are horrific,” the letter reads, going on to note Biden’s approval of a major disaster declaration.
