Massive Fire Erupts In New York City, Multiple Injuries

A 5-alarm fire erupted at an apartment complex in the Bronx early Friday morning, injuring multiple people.

“The fire broke out in the upper floors of the building on Wallace Avenue just before 1:45 a.m. on Friday and was finally under control just before 2 p.m.,” ABC7 New York noted.

“Approximately 200 Fire and EMS personnel are operating at the scene of the 5-alarm fire on Wallace Avenue in the Bronx,” FDNY stated.

“Heavy fire destroyed all the apartments on the top floor, burned through the roof,” FDNY Chief of Department John Esposito said, according to ABC7 New York.

“Initially we had fire companies inside, conducting searches, removing people and attempting to fight the fire. The fire had too much headway, it’s extremely dangerous to our firefighters,” he added.

“There are seven minor injuries, five to firefighters and two to civilians. FDNY Fire Marshals are on scene investigating the cause,” FDNY wrote.

ABC7 New York reports:

One resident said they smelled smoke and then firefighters told everyone they needed to evacuate.

“Everyone just grabbed what they could and we left the building,” said a resident named Jenny. “I would have expected a lot more smoke inside the building for the way it looked outside of the building.”

At least eight people, including firefighters, suffered smoke inhalation in the fire.

“Thank God no life-threatening injuries,” Mayor Eric Adams said. “But this was a massive fire and the wind played a major role.”

Fire Commissioner Robert Tucker said it’s “a miracle” that there were only minor injuries in the fire so far.

Per USA TODAY:

The department reported the fire “was extremely dangerous” for firefighters, so fire officials removed them from the building to continue tackling flames from outside.

“We’re using tower ladders to extinguish the rest of the building, and we’re continuing with that operation,” the agency posted about 8:45 a.m. ET.

Hundreds of firefighters have responded to help extinguish the blaze, officials reported, who have been battling “a heavy wind condition that advanced the fire.”
