Congresswoman Unveils Legislation To Rename Gulf Of Mexico To “Gulf Of America”

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) revealed legislation to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America.”

“Mexican cartels currently use the Gulf of Mexico to traffic humans, drugs, weapons, and God knows what else while the Mexican government allows them to do it. The American people are footing the bill to protect and secure the maritime waterways for commerce to be conducted. Our U.S. armed forces protect the area from any military threats from foreign countries,” Greene said.

“It’s our gulf. The rightful name is the Gulf of America and it’s what the entire world should refer to it as. As soon as President Trump made his announcement, I directed my staff to get the bill drafted,” she continued.

“We already have the bill written with legislative council and ready to file first thing Thursday morning. Congress has to take the Trump Agenda mandate seriously and that means acting fast to enact it,” she added.

President Trump announced on Tuesday he will be renaming it the Gulf of America.

“The Gulf of America, what a beautiful name,” Trump said.

Per Axios:

Greene said on conservative influencer Benny Johnson’s podcast she was “so fired up watching the press conference” that she directed her staff “to immediately draft legislation.”

It is unclear how the bill would impose the name change, though Greene suggested it would require federal agencies, including the U.S. military, to make “Gulf of America” the official name they use to refer to the Gulf.

There is already significant interest from Greene’s GOP colleagues in co-sponsoring the legislation, a source familiar with the matter told Axios, a detail first reported by the Washington Examiner.

The bill will likely be a long-shot to clear the Senate’s 60-vote filibuster threshold, though Greene could try to have it attached to a larger package.

Still, Greene noted the bill likely would require federal funding to enforce a name change, meaning it could rankle some of her fellow conservatives.

From The Hill:

As Trump prepares to take office for the second time, he’s begun solidifying his economic agenda, including levying additional tariffs. Late last year, he announced there would be a 25 percent tariff on goods imported from Canada and Mexico.

Trump subsequently met with exiting Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who announced his resignation Monday, and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.

The president-elect has continually bashed Mexico and on Tuesday said it was a “very dangerous place” that was run by cartels.

The president-elect also suggested Monday that the U.S. merge with Canada after Trudeau’s exit, claiming there would be “no tariffs” and they would be secure from international threats. The pitch comes weeks after he trolled the prime minister by calling him the “governor” of Canada and joking that the nation could be the 51st state.
