Democrat Governor Going To Washington D.C. In Attempt to Stop Confirmation Of Trump Cabinet Nominee

Hawaii Gov. Josh Green will travel to Washington D.C. and speak with U.S. Senate members against the nomination of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for Health and Human Services secretary.

“This Sunday I’m going to take a quick trip over to Washington D.C. to explain why RFK Jr. concerns me,” Green said.

“His appointment to be the head of Health and Human Services is not consistent with safety for our children. He’s against vaccinations,” he continued.

“This is a bad idea,” he added.

Governor Josh Green, M.D., will travel to Washington, D.C., to meet with Senate members considering the nomination of Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. as Secretary of Health and Human Services. Drawing from his extensive experience as an emergency room physician, Governor Green will provide critical insight into the implications of this nomination, which has drawn opposition from numerous public health experts.

In 2019, Governor Green, then serving as Hawai‘i’s Lieutenant Governor, joined an international effort to combat a devastating measles epidemic in Samoa. He worked on the front lines to vaccinate thousands of residents, helping to curb the outbreak and demonstrating the critical importance of science-based public health responses.

The Governor will depart Hawai‘i on the evening of Sunday, Jan. 5, 2025, and will return on Thursday afternoon, January 9, 2025. During his absence, Lieutenant Governor Sylvia Luke will serve as Acting Governor.

According to The Hill, some Senate Democrats are open to backing RFK Jr. for the position.

From The Hill:

A handful of Senate Democrats are said to be leaving the door open to voting for Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to become the next Health and Human Services secretary.

As preparations for confirmation hearings begin to take shape, multiple sources say Sens. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) and John Fetterman (D-Pa.), in particular, are at least considering voting for Kennedy, noting shared critiques on heavy corporate influence over food and a desire to promote a less chemical-laden country.

Their perceived openness comes despite a fervent backlash against Kennedy’s nomination from many within the Democratic Party, where his controversial stances on vaccinations still could be a deciding factor for many who see his views as dangerous for public health.

Still, some believe a number of Democrats are signaling they want to give President-elect Trump’s ally and ex-presidential rival a chance to make his case.

“I think Bernie will give him a fair review,” said one source close to the senator’s office.

Lawmakers are notoriously tight-lipped about their votes ahead of many Cabinet fights. The optics of backing any nominee by Trump put most Democrats in a tricky position. And Kennedy in particular makes things more complicated.
