Fire Erupts At Famous Holiday Market

A fire erupted Friday morning at New York City’s famous holiday market in Bryant Park.

Multiple kiosks and the roof of an ice-skating rink caught fire around 9:30 a.m.

“We found a fire in the kiosk behind me, approximately 6 feet by about 40 feet long,” FDNY Chief of Battalion 9, Joe Castellano, said, according to the New York Post.

“There was fire in there throughout,” he added.

Sources told The Post the inferno appeared to have started as a trash fire and then spread to the shed.

It wasn’t clear how the trash caught fire.

A photo shows a small booth called Seapark, boasting offerings of lobster rolls and seafood fries, catching fire, before massive flames could be seen in images of the market.

But Castellano said it looked worse than it was.

“There was slight damage to the adjacent kiosk, and there was some heat impingement on the roof of the ice skating rink behind the kiosk on fire,” Castellano said. “No real fire spread, just some flame impingement, and you see a little browning of the white roof structure.”

“There were no injuries. The cause of the fire is under investigation by FDNY Fire Marshals,” FDNY wrote.

Per USA TODAY:

Each winter, Bryant Park hosts a large holiday market in the 9.6-acre space, with several vendors, an ice skating rink, a food hall, and igloos.

In a statement, the Bryant Park Corporation, the nonprofit that manages the park, said most holiday shops reopened Friday.

All holiday shops that weren’t affected by the fire are expected to reopen later in the day as well as the market ice skating rink and lodge, the nonprofit’s statement said.

Just over a week ago, another holiday market in Manhattan’s Herald Square, about five blocks south of Bryant Park, had an electrical fire destroy several vendors’ booths.

In addition to events at the space, Bryant Park also houses the main branch of the New York Public Library.
