According to reports, the mayor of a township in Ontario, Canada, had his personal bank account garnished after he refused to pay a fine that a human rights tribunal levied against him for not recognizing LGBTQ Pride Month.
The Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario ruled that Emo Township Mayor Harold McQuaker, 77, pay a CA$5,000 fine (about $3,511 USD) and undergo Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) training.
Borderland Pride, a local LGBTQ advocacy organization, brought a legal case that accused the township of discrimination for voting against a Pride Month declaration in 2020.
McQuaker also faced accusations of making a “discriminatory remark” during a town council meeting after the group requested the township fly a Pride flag.
The mayor refused to pay the fine or undergo training, calling it “extortion.”
“I utterly refuse to pay the $5,000 because that’s extortion,” he told the Toronto Sun.

“Mayor McQuaker’s comments in the Toronto Sun and other media were very clear that he did not respect nor intend to comply with the Tribunal’s orders,” Borderland Pride said in an email to the Toronto Sun.
“Consequently, it was apparent he would not voluntarily make payment of the damages ordered. We took immediate action to garnish his bank account,” the group added.
Toronto Sun reports:
On ensuring he did pay, Borderland Pride said, “The garnishment was issued by the court and delivered to the CIBC in Emo, which is the only bank in that community” and ”there is no hearing or application to issue a notice of garnishment – it is a service provided at the court counter or online once a person has an order for the payment of money.”
Borderland Pride also wrote, “Orders of the Tribunal can be enforced in the same manner as any civil judgment for the payment of money. We intend to ensure the Tribunal’s orders are complied with.”
Turns out Mayor McQuaker is not in charge there – Borderland Pride is.
Cancel culture is cancelling this mayor and digging into his personal savings too. On a weak premise that there is discrimination of LGBT people there, the enforcement is harsher than most violent criminals receive. It seems like a heavy-handed, undemocratic move, not to mention a violation of personal finances, and cruel and unusual punishment.

Mayor Harold McQuaker says he won’t pay a $5000 fine for not flying the pride flag, nor will he attend “re-education training”. He also won’t comply with demands to host a drag time story hour in the local library.

Per Fox News:
Borderland Pride has since shared several posts on their Facebook account mocking the mayor and his defenders.
ADVERTISEMENT“Sure, sex is great, but have you ever garnished your mayor’s bank account after he publicly refused to comply with a Tribunal’s order to pay damages?” read a post by Borderland Pride on Facebook.
McQuaker did not immediately return Fox News Digital’s request for comment.
The ruling came as a result of a 2020 incident in which the town was approached by Borderland Pride asking Emo to declare June Pride Month.
The group’s request also included a draft proclamation, containing clauses such as “pride is necessary to show community support and belonging for LGBTQ2 individuals” and “the diversity of sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression represents a positive contribution to society.”
Borderland Pride also asked the city to fly an “LGBTQ2 rainbow flag for a week of your choosing.”
The request was defeated by a 3-2 vote at a later Emo township council meeting.
