After Brian Thompson was gunned down in midtown Manhattan earlier this month, it didn’t take long for too many Americans to begin sympathizing with his alleged killer.
Not only was Thompson the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, which fueled public backlash against the insurance industry, but the suspected shooter has become something of a folk here — if not a sex symbol — to some.
And even though radio host Charlamagne Tha God often aligns with leftist causes and politicians, he chose to speak out against those gleefully reacting to Thompson’s death.
As the Daily Caller reported:
“I just don’t understand why everybody making so light of the UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson getting killed … let’s even forget what he is, right, as a United Healthcare CEO,” Charlamagne said. “All I see is a father walking in New York City to go to his job and he got gunned down.”
Co-host DJ Envy chimed in to note that Thompson “doesn’t own the company” and was “hired to do a job.”
“I don’t understand why people are celebrating him being killed because at the end of the day, like I said yesterday, he’s dead. His kids don’t got no father. That 26-year-old Luigi [Mangione], or whatever his name is, he gon’ be in jail for the rest of his life,” Charlamagne added. “And the healthcare system is still the same today — the health companies still denying claims and everything today. So what did that accomplish? And why are you happy about him being gunned down like that? It’s just weird where we are as a people.”
Of course, plenty of other people have been similarly incensed by the heartless response of so many Americans:
Brian Thompson went from Jewell, Iowa (population 1,200) to leading 140,000 employees and overseeing $280B of revenue at one of the world’s most important companies. His mom worked as a beautician, his dad at a grain elevator—they were probably really proud when he graduated… pic.twitter.com/vX6JT2N30j

Many of those statements, however, were drowned out by a flood of posts revealing sympathy and/or support for the alleged gunman:
New Yorkers are putting up “Wanted” posters of private healthcare insurance CEOs for “denying medical care for corporate profit.” Videos from TikTok users show posters of Brian Thompson, the slain United Healthcare head executive, with a cross through the middle. pic.twitter.com/AHRQcGzXmz

And during his recent rant, Charlamagne Tha God referenced a particularly objectionable reaction from former Washington Post columnist Taylor Lorenz.
As Fox News reported:
“I do believe in the sanctity of life and I think that’s why I felt, along with so many other Americans, joy, unfortunately,” Lorenz told Piers during Monday’s episode, describing her feelings on Thompson’s death.
She quickly walked back the word “joy,” but the host pounced, asking, “How could this make you joyful? This guy is a husband, he’s a father, and he’s been gunned down in the middle of Manhattan. Why does that make you joyful?”
“So are the tens of thousands of Americans that he murdered!” she fired back. “So are the tens of thousands of Americans, innocent Americans, who died because greedy health insurance executives like this one push a policy of denying care to the most vulnerable people.”
Here’s a clip of that fiery on-air exchange:
