GOP Senator Expects Senate To Confirm All Of President Trump’s Nominees

Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) said he expects the GOP-majority U.S. Senate to confirm all of President Trump’s cabinet nominations.

“I expect our Republican Senate is going to confirm all of President Trump’s nominees,” Cotton said Monday morning.

“Of the 72 cabinet secretary nominees since the Clinton transition, only 2 nominees have ever received NO votes from the president-elect’s party,” Cotton continued.

“No one should be surprised that the Republican Senate will confirm President Trump’s nominees,” he added.

Cotton’s statement holds significance after he was elected to become Senate Republican Conference chair.

From POLITICO:

Senate Republicans have tapped Sen. Tom Cotton, an unwavering conservative, to be their Republican Conference chair, elevating a lawmaker known for his hawkish foreign policy positions and efforts to restrict immigration into a top-tier leadership role.

Cotton (R-Ark.), who is serving his second term after being elected in 2014, bested Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa.) for the No. 3 spot in the Senate GOP hierarchy. The vote was 35-18, according to two people familiar with the vote.

Despite Cotton’s comments, President Trump has already had one of his nominations withdraw from consideration.

Former Florida Congressman Matt Gaetz withdrew his name from consideration to be attorney general so he wouldn’t be a “distraction” for the administration.

There is also speculation several of Trump’s other nominees could face pushback from other GOP senators, including Pete Hegseth for defense secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr. for Health and Human Services secretary, Kash Patel for FBI Director, and Tulsi Gabbard for Director of National Intelligence.

“Nobody should be surprised that a Republican Senate is gonna confirm the Republican president-elect’s Cabinet secretaries,” Cotton said on Fox News.
