DEVELOPING: Authorities Detain Person Of Interest In Murder Of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson

A person of interest in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson was detained by law enforcement authorities in Pennsylvania.

The man was identified as 26-year-old Luigi Mangione.

According to the New York Post, Mangione was taken into custody Monday morning at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania.

“At this time, he is believed to be our person of interest in the brazen, targeted murder of Brian Thompson,” NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said, according to CBS News.

“The suspect was in a McDonald’s and then recognized by an employee who then called police. Responding officers questioned the suspect, who was acting suspiciously and was carrying multiple fraudulent IDs as well as a U.S. passport,” Tisch added.

Mangione is reportedly an “anti-capitalist Ivy League grad” and apparently “hated the medical community because of how it treated his sick relative,” the New York Post noted.

The 26-year-old allegedly shared quotes online from “Unabomber” Ted Kaczynski.

“Mangione studied at the University of Pennsylvania. He was valedictorian of his 2016 graduating class at the Gilman School in Baltimore, according to the New York Post,” Collin Rugg wrote.

The former prep-school valedictorian was caught with a gun, silencer, four fake IDs with names used during the killer’s stint in New York City — and a manifesto, sources said.

The manifesto railed against the US healthcare industry, including over its enormous profits and alleged shady motives, sources said.

Mangione had a particularly personal reason to hate the medical community — its treatment of an ailing relative, sources said.

Online obituaries show he lost a grandmother in 2013 and grandfather in 2017.

His LinkedIn page indicates that he once worked in an assisted-living facility for the elderly for a few months in 2014, while still in high school.

Per CBS News:

After Thompson, 50, was fatally shot outside the Hilton Midtown hotel on Dec. 4, NYPD identified a person of interest who they said had used a fake New Jersey ID to check into a hostel on Manhattan’s Upper West Side. Investigators later said they believed the person of interest had left New York City, possibly on a bus bound for Atlanta.

A source close to the investigation said that a person of interest was being questioned about Thompson’s murder after Pennsylvania authorities took him into custody on an unrelated incident in Altoona. He was in possession of a gun with a silencer, matching a description of the weapon used to kill Thompson, and a fake New Jersey driver’s license, sources said.

Two law enforcement sources said a person at a McDonald’s restaurant called Pennsylvania police after spotting Mangione, who they said resembled the person of interest sought by the NYPD. Local authorities responded and arrested him on an illegal gun charge while investigators worked to confirm whether he is the alleged gunman who shot Thompson.

“This is a strong person of interest,” New York City Mayor Eric Adams said. “He matches the description of the identification we’ve been looking for. He’s also in possession of several items that we believe will connect him to this incident.”

Over the weekend, NYPD continued to search Central Park for clues, specifically the weapon used to kill Thompson, but were unsuccessful. Investigators on Friday found what they believe is the suspected gunman’s backpack in the park, law enforcement officials told CBS News.
