County That Flipped Republican For First Time In Over 30 Years To Name Street After President Trump

Donald Trump was the first Republican presidential candidate to win Miami-Dade County, the Sunshine State’s most populous county, in 36 years.

“Biden won it by 7 points in 2020. Hillary won it by 30 points in 2016,” Glenn Greenwald said.

Now, Miami-Dade will honor President Trump by adding his name to a thoroughfare in the county.

Democratic members of the Miami-Dade County Commission declined to block the request to name the avenue after Trump.

Miami-Dade will honor President-elect Donald J. Trump by adding his name to an avenue in Hialeah, a tribute that Democratic members of the county board declined to block.

The County Commission voted 9 to 1 on Tuesday to approve Hialeah’s request for county recognition of the city adding Trump’s name to Palm Avenue.

Democrats on the County Commission could have blocked Tuesday’s approval because Democratic commissioners hold seven of the officially nonpartisan board’s 13 seats. But only one chose to vote against: Marleine Bastien, a Haitian American who represents areas in northern Miami and nearby communities.

“The Miami-Dade County Commission has passed an item to rename Palm Avenue as President Donald J. Trump Avenue, commemorating the legacy of the 45th and 47th President of the United States,” Hialeah Mayor Esteban Bovo said.

Per NBC 6 South Florida:

The Hialeah city council last year approved a proposal to rename the road for Trump after Mayor Esteban “Steve” Bovo announced the move and presented Trump with a street sign at a rally.

Miami-Dade Commissioner Kevin Cabrera supported the county’s recognizing of the name change.

“Our community deeply understands and appreciates the sacrifice, work, and dedication of President Trump,” Cabrera said in a statement Tuesday. “By naming Palm Avenue—a vital artery that runs through the heart of Hialeah and serves as a hub for local businesses and cultural identity—we are forever immortalizing President Trump’s legacy. Future generations who traverse this street will be reminded of his fight for the principles of freedom, prosperity, and opportunity.”

Cabrera said Trump won about 75% of the vote in Hialeah in last month’s election. He also won Miami-Dade by more than 13%, the first time a Republican has won the county since 1988.
