[WATCH] Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene Says DOGE Subcommittee Will Look Into Defunding Media Program

In an interview on Fox News’ Sunday Morning Futures with Maria Bartiromo, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) said the newly created Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) will look into defunding NPR.

House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) previously announced Greene will chair a new subcommittee to work with Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy’s DOGE to cut wasteful government spending.

“When we look into a deep dive into this massive problem that caused America to be thirty-six trillion dollars in debt, we’re going to have to go into all kinds of buckets,” Greene said.

“And that’s how I’ll be separating things on the oversight subcommittee on DOGE. We’ll be looking at everything from government-funded media programs like NPR that spread nothing but Democrat propaganda,” she continued.

Per Newsweek:

The subcommittee is expected to investigate wasteful spending, examine ways to reorganize federal agencies to improve efficiency and identify solutions to eliminate bureaucratic red tape.

Greene said: “I’d like to talk to the governors of sanctuary states and the mayors of sanctuary cities and have them come before our committee and explain why they deserve federal dollars if they’re going to harbor illegal criminal aliens in their states and their cities.”

Newsweek has reached out to several governors of sanctuary states, including New York, Vermont, Oregon, and Colorado as well as the New York ACLU for comment via email on Sunday.

Immigration and border security were top issues during the 2024 presidential election. Trump won the election on a platform pledging to enact mass deportations, curb undocumented immigration, and reinforce the southern border.

Sanctuary cities and states protect undocumented immigrants from deportation or prosecution by federal agents, like Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detainers. There is no legal definition of a sanctuary city, but it refers to areas that limit assistance to federal immigration authorities. Like other cities and states, sanctuary jurisdictions receive federal funding.

“We want to work for the taxpayers, not the bureaucrats,” Comer previously said.

“I come from a business background and have successfully run a construction company my entire adult life. In the private sector, if you’re not doing a good job, you get fired. But for some reason, in government, bad employees—whether they’re failing to do the job they were hired to do or working in roles that are no longer needed—never get fired,” Greene said.

“This is incredibly unfair to the hard-working taxpayers of our country, and it’s about to change. I can’t wait to get to work!!” she added.

Elon Musk previously suggested to defund NPR after comments about the media’s role in “truth” by the organization’s CEO resurfaced online.

“I think our reverence for the truth might have become a bit of a distraction that is preventing us from finding consensus and getting important things done,” Katherine Maher said.

“Should your tax dollars really be paying for an organization run by people who think the truth is a ‘distraction?’” Musk commented.

Fox Business noted:

Elon Musk renewed calls on Tuesday to defund NPR after a controversial video of its CEO questioning the importance of truth resurfaced online.

Footage of NPR CEO Katherine Maher from an August 2021 Ted Talk reappeared on X Tuesday, sparking new debate over the taxpayer funded broadcaster’s alleged bias, which has come under scrutiny in recent months.

In the 10-second clip, Maher questioned the role truth plays in the industry as the then-CEO of Wikimedia. She took over as CEO of NPR in March 2024.

“I think our reverence for the truth might have become a bit of a distraction that is preventing us from finding consensus and getting important things done,” Maher told the crowd.
