Although a handful of disaffected Republicans have turned their backs on the party due to their disdain for President Donald Trump, the overwhelming majority have fallen in line behind his Make America Great Again agenda.
Even Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY), who has frequently butted heads with Trump, offered an endorsement earlier this year.
As the Associated Press reported at the time:
“It is abundantly clear that former President Trump has earned the requisite support of Republican voters to be our nominee for President of the United States,” McConnell said in the statement.
McConnell said, “It should come as no surprise that as nominee, he will have my support.”
Here’s how McConnell explained his decision in greater detail during a subsequent interview:
.@LeaderMcConnell says he has endorsed Donald Trump "because the voters of my party…made a decision," but when pressed, he says:
"The issue is — what kind of influence, even if I had chosen to get involved in the presidential election, what kind of influence would I have had?" pic.twitter.com/38QwJ4MsgW

But there’s no denying the history of bad blood between the two Republican leaders:
President Trump attacks McConnell:
"A tremendous liability for the Republican Party and for the nation because he approved so much for Biden it was almost as if the Democrats had something on him."pic.twitter.com/XVnIWajPSY

🧵 1. McConnell’s attacks on Donald Trump & Rick Scott are indefensible
Those running for Senate GOP leadership posts need to weigh in on this & commit never to sabotage Republican candidates & colleagues—particularly those who are less than two weeks away from a close election pic.twitter.com/wMWxjvMwHC

Mitch McConnell privately slammed Donald Trump as ‘stupid’ and ‘despicable’ after 2020 election https://t.co/l59Cq1gzkr

Trump referenced their rocky relationship during a campaign rally, noting the reluctance with which the Senate GOP leader must have issued his endorsement.
As The Hill reported:
Trump was speaking at a rally in North Carolina on Sunday, when he mentioned McConnell after remarks about the inflation seen under President Biden and Vice President Harris’s administration.
“They caused inflation. They screwed up my energy policy and the prices went way up and everything else, real simple. In addition to that, they way overspent. They got trillions and trillions of dollars,” Trump said, highlighted by Mediaite.
“Hopefully we get rid of Mitch McConnell pretty soon because he helped that guy. Can you believe he endorsed me? Boy, that must have been a painful day in his life,” he continued.
Here’s a clip of Trump’s recent remarks about McConnell:
