Federal Agencies Raid Brooklyn Prison Where Sean “Diddy” Combs is Being Held in Secretive Operation

A somewhat secretive Federal Task Force constituting cooperation between multiple Federal agencies raided the Metropolitan Detention Center where high-profile prisoners are being held, including Sean “Diddy” Combs.

The operation comes after the facility faced increased scrutiny recently, according to a CBS report on today’s raid, which is ongoing.

The Federal Bureau of Prisons told CBS News in a statement the operation was “designed to achieve our shared goal of maintaining a safe environment for both our employees and the incarcerated individuals housed at MDC Brooklyn.”

The statement added there is no active threat at the facility.

The bureau partnered with the U.S. Department of Justice Office of the Inspector General and other law enforcement agencies for the sweep.

The operation comes as MDC Brooklyn faces increased scrutiny over deaths, violence and dismal conditions. The Bureau of Prisons and the Justice Department have been pushing to fix the problems and hold perpetrators accountable.

Last month, nine inmates were charged in a series of attacks at the troubled jail. Federal prosecutors shared serious safety and security concerns, including two inmates being stabbed to death and a correctional officer shooting at a car during an unauthorized chase.

While rumors are swirling about what exactly prompted this raid, the Bureau of Prisons is not spilling the beans on the specifics of the raid’s purpose.  It could be that it is a fairly mundane move in response to a consistent history of unsafe conditions and recent violent occurrences in the prison, though the surprise nature of the raid coupled with the secrecy involved could also portend a more specific reason related to any number of high-profile prisoners.

The New York Post is reporting that the interagency operation was launched in coordination with investigators from the Bureau of Prisons, the Inspector General of the Dept. of Justice, and various other law enforcement agencies this morning.

In a statement Monday, the Bureau of Prisons said its operation in Brooklyn was pre-planned and that there is “no active threat.”

The agency said it wouldn’t provide additional details about what exactly investigators were doing there on Monday until the operation is complete “in an effort to maintain the safety and security of all personnel inside the facility and the integrity of this operation.”

The facility, in an industrial area on the Brooklyn waterfront, has about 1,200 detainees, down from more than 1,600 in January.

It’s used mainly for post-arrest detention for people awaiting trial in federal courts in Manhattan or Brooklyn. Other inmates are there to serve short sentences following convictions.

At this time, the Bureau of Prisons is not releasing further information or answering questions regarding the raid.  The secrecy and multi-agency nature of the raid has increased rumors that today’s operation could be related to the Sean “Diddy” Combs’ sex trafficking and racketeering scandal.

This is a developing story.  We will bring you updates as they become available.
