“Within Two Seconds”: That’s How Fast President Trump Just Said He’ll Fire Jack Smith – On Day One!

In an interview today with Hugh Hewitt, President Trump didn’t beat around the bush or hold his cards close — on day one, he’ll fire Jack Smith, when he’s elected to a second term.

Hewitt asked if President Trump would pardon himself or fire Smith, according to a story in USA Today, to which Trump responded that he would definitely fire Jack Smith.  President Trump almost seemed to laugh, a little stunned that anyone would have any question as to whether he would fire Jack Smith as soon as possible.

“I would fire him within two seconds,” Trump told radio show host Hugh Hewitt.

Smith is the top prosecutor in two cases against Trump, one involving efforts to overturn the 2020 election and the other dealing with taking classified documents when he left office.

In the Thursday interview, Hewitt asked Trump if he would pardon himself or fire Smith; Trump responded that he would do the latter.

“I wouldn’t keep him,” Trump said to Breitbart News in July 2023. “Jack Smith? Why would I keep him? He is deranged.”

As related in a Washington Post article, President Trump was indicted initially by a federal grand jury in 2023 on four counts, one of which has already been thrown out — but Jack Smith is appealing the dismissal.  As I have reported recently, it seems as though Smith recognizes that his cases are never going to stick — but he’s determined to squeeze every bit of possible injury to President Trump out of them, first.

“Oh, it’s so easy. It’s so easy. … I would fire him within two seconds,” Trump said of Smith, who is leading the Justice Department’s investigations into Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 presidential election and the hoarding of classified documents.

As part of the election-related investigation, Trump was indicted by a federal grand jury in August 2023 on four criminal counts, including conspiracy to defraud the United States; conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding; obstruction of and attempting to obstruct an official proceeding; and conspiracy against rights.

The classified-documents case has been dismissed, but Smith is appealing.

The authority to hire and fire a special counsel falls to the attorney general. But if Trump wins the election, he is expected to appoint an attorney general who would seek the dismissal of both federal cases against him.

Smith was appointed special counsel by Attorney General Merrick Garland to oversee both investigations.

Trump also claimed it would be easy to “fire” Smith because “we got immunity at the Supreme Court,” referring to a July ruling in which the high court said presidents have “absolute” immunity for clearly official acts but no immunity for unofficial acts.

And as Mike Davis, former Chief Counsel for the Senate Judiciary Committee, is pointing out, President Trump immediately filed another motion to dismiss the case brought by Jack Smith after Biden’s “lock him up” attacks yesterday.

The legal battles may drag on, but one thing seems certain — Jack Smith will either need to fill out new job applications soon, or sign up for welfare.  Because it doesn’t seem very likely that President Trump is going to let the injustices slide.  Good; that’s what all this is about anyway.  DRAIN THE SWAMP.
