High School Cross Country Runner Passes Away After Collapsing On Run, Sport’s Third Death In Middle Tennessee This Season


A high school cross country runner passed away due to complications following her collapse during a run.

Janie Grace Moss, a senior at Goodpasture Christian School, died Wednesday morning.

“It is with great sadness we share that GCS senior Janie Grace Moss passed away this morning. We are so thankful for the person she was in this world. Her light shines and will continue to shine bright. Please be prayerful for her family and the GCS school community,” Goodpasture Sports wrote.

“Janie Grace was running at Moss Wright Park on Sunday, October 13th when she collapsed. After shocking her heart many times, paramedics were able to get her to Skyline Medical Center to continue to work on her,” a GoFundMe created for her stated.

“She was then life-flighted to Centennial Hospital for a higher level of care. Janie Grace experienced cerebral edema and was on life support. God called her home on Wednesday October 16th,” it continued.

She was also a member of Goodpasture’s cheer and swim teams.

Her cause of death was not immediately known.

According to The Tennessean, Moss’s death is the third of a cross country runner in Middle Tennessee this TSSAA season.

Sycamore runner Tristen Franklin died on Aug. 27 after collapsing during a run in triple-digit temperatures. He was 15. Franklin was on a run in his neighborhood, not on school property, when he collapsed. His cause of death has not been released.

Katherine Lindsay Rust, an eighth grader at Thompson’s Station Middle School, died on Sept. 18 after running in a meet, according to her obituary. She was 13.

A high school cross-country star in Tennessee died while on a run in his neighborhood amid scorching temperatures, school district officials said.

Tristen Franklin, 15, a student at Sycamore High School in Pleasant View, had gone for a run in his neighborhood on Tuesday afternoon when he suddenly collapsed and quick-thinking neighbors called 911, NBC affiliate WSMV of Nashville reported.

Franklin had been running outdoors as the Nashville area was experiencing extreme heat, with three consecutive days of triple-digit temperatures Tuesday through Thursday. Pleasant View is located about 30 miles northwest of Nashville.

“Katherine ‘Kate’ Lindsay Rust, 13, of Thompson’s Station, Tennessee, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on September 18th, 2024 after running in her middle school cross-country meet,” Rust’s obituary read.
