Former Democrat Governor Assaulted

Former New York Gov. David Paterson, a lifelong Democrat, and his stepson were assaulted by a group of young suspects while walking their dog in Manhattan Friday night.

Paterson, the first legally blind individual to be sworn in as governor of a U.S. state, served as New York governor from 2008 to 2010.

“Paterson, 70, and his wife’s 20-year-old son encountered the group of young men, possibly teens, climbing a fire escape on Second Avenue near East 96th Street shortly before 9 p.m.,” the New York Post reports.

According to the outlet, the suspects had a previous interaction with Paterson’s stepson.

“They both suffered some injuries but were able to fight off their attackers,” Sean Darcy, Paterson’s spokesperson, told the outlet.

From the New York Post:

The ex-governor sustained an injury to his head, while his stepson suffered a face wound, sources said. Sources said his stepson’s injury was more severe.

They were taken to a local hospital to be treated, sources said.

No arrests were made as of late Friday.

Paterson, who served as New York’s governor from 2008 to 2010, is married to Mary Paterson, the ex-wife of Guardian Angels founder Curtis Sliwa.

Per NBC News:

Paterson was lieutenant governor under Gov. Eliot Spitzer and took over as governor in March 2008 after Spitzer resigned mid-term following a prostitution scandal. Paterson served the remainder of the term, until the end of 2010. He did not seek reelection.

A police report has been filed, Darcy said.

Police said when officers arrived, Paterson had injuries to his head and another man had injuries to his face. Both are in stable condition.

No arrests have been made in the attack, which is under investigation, police said.
