Artist Honors Corey Comperatore’s Sacrifice at President Trump’s Rally

Despite the emotional toll, Helen Comperatore returns to the rally site with her daughters to honor her late husband, and their father.

Corey Comperatore, the man who sacrificed his life protecting his family during an assassination attempt on President Trump, was greatly honored.

There were many speeches that spoke highly of him.

Even Artist Scott Lobaido created a mural commemorating Corey, which was unveiled at the rally, evoking cheers and chants of “Corey!” from the crowd.

New York Times reports:

Helen Comperatore, the widow of Corey Comperatore, the former volunteer fire chief who was killed when a gunman tried to assassinate former President Donald J. Trump on July 13 at a rally in Butler, Pa., returned to the venue on Saturday when Mr. Trump came back for another rally.

Mr. Comperatore, who was in the bleachers behind Mr. Trump in July, was killed as he tried to shield his wife and their two daughters when the shooter opened fire. Ms. Comperatore said that while it had not been an easy decision, she and her daughters had agreed that her late husband, who was a longtime Trump supporter, would have wanted them to return to the Butler Farm Show fairgrounds for Mr. Trump’s rally.

“To go back up to that site where my husband was killed and open wounds that we’re trying to close — my kids haven’t even started to go back to work yet, and I was afraid it’d take them backwards,” she said in an interview this week. But ultimately, she said, “we decided this was something we needed to do.”

“We needed to go and honor Corey,” she said. “He would have done it for me.”

Newsweek adds:

Former volunteer fire chief Corey Comperatore, who was killed at Donald Trump’s campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on July 13 was honored at the former president’s second rally in the town on Saturday with memorials, artwork, prayers and the crowd chanting his name.

More than two-and-a-half-months ago, Thomas Matthew Crooks fired eight rounds at Trump in an assassination attempt, grazing the former president’s right ear, killing Comperatore, and injuring two other attendees.

Trump’s plane just flew over the Butler Farm Show—the same venue where he was last seen being escorted by U.S. Secret Service agents, blood dripping down his face—to complete a campaign rally that was cut short by the July 13 shooting.

Ahead of the rally, Trump said he would honor Comperatore’s memory, recognize the injured attendees, and thank law enforcement during his second Butler visit.

At the Saturday rally, Comperatore’s Buffalo Township fire jacket and helmet are displayed in the top left corner of the stands, surrounded by an arrangement of roses and gladioluses.

Newsweek reporter Monica Sager, on the ground at the Butler rally, identified several other posters and flower memorials at the venue. At one point, artist Scott LoBaido unveiled a painting of Comperatore on stage, with the crowd chanting “Corey, Corey, Corey.”

Newsweek’s on-the-ground reporter noted that Christianity was a recurring theme in conversations with attendees about Comperatore. Several attendees are also wearing shirts that reference God and Jesus.
