Micah Drye, 7 Year Old Boy, Calls On Jesus as the Floodwaters Sweep Him From His Mother’s Arms

It has been a rough week for millions of people in the destructive path of Hurricane Helene.  But even in the midst of tragedy, God never fails to leave Himself a witness to His glory.

Let me introduce you to Micah Drye.  Micah was looking forward to being a superhero for Halloween this year.  But at seven years old, he was caught with his mother and grandparents as the floodwaters rose around their home in Asheville, North Carolina.

Micah, along with his grandparents, would not survive, and would later drown in the floodwaters after their house broke apart from under them.  But it is how Micah handled that moment, and his faith, that I feel compelled to share with you.

This picture was snapped by Micah’s mother, Meghan, as they sat on the roof of their house.  At that point, Meghan, the only survivor of the four, said that she thought they had reached their safe point — and it would be from there that they would wait until rescue arrived.  You can see Meghan’s parents in the bottom corner of the frame, and below.

That’s when things got rough.  But, that is also when a little boy of only seven years old proved that his faith was the real deal.  As the floodwaters continued to rush passed the home with the four family members huddled together on the roof, their worst nightmare was realized — the house began to break apart.  Here’s how Meghan Drye described the situation as reported by Fox News:

The floodwater rose high enough that Drye and her son, along with her parents, had to climb to the roof of their home for safety. However, the flood became so powerful that it broke the home apart.

At that moment, Drye said her son called for Jesus to save him.

“He reached for something past flesh, past human, past anything that even grown adults, I think, would reach for,” she said. “My son called out to the one God Almighty. And I think at that moment he was rescued, and he became my hero, and I think all of them carried me through that moment.”

All four were sent downstream, with Micah being torn away from his mother.

That is a still frame from the following video, which is longer than what I would ordinarily include in a story. Trust me when I tell you it is worth watching.  Here is Meghan Drye and her sister, Micah’s Aunt, in an interview with Fox News following the tragedy of losing their parents and Micah in the floodwaters.  The testimony that this mother gives of her son’s faith in the midst of this literal storm is something beautiful to behold, even in the midst of tragedy.

Acts 14:17 says, “He did not leave Himself without a witness…”, and from my vantage point, He still hasn’t.  Even in the midst of the floodwaters God gave enough faith to a little boy that he could meet death looking for deliverance from only one place — Jesus Christ.  I believe Micah Drye found that deliverance in a way that far exceeds any earthly rescue.

As a father, this was a hard story to cover; which seems to be the trend lately in a world that has completely lost its’ bearing.  Knowing that many of our readers are parents and grandparents, I expect watching Meghan Drye talk about her son’s final moments is equally hard for many of you.  But I am reminded in a powerful way that I will carry forward with me — and I hope you will, too — that even in the midst of the worst that life can throw at us… Jesus is still on His throne.

He is still King.  He is still Sovereign.  And He is still GOOD.  And it warms my heart in a deep way, in spite of his death, to know that Micah Drye didn’t have to meet His Lord with timidity or fear because he had not mistakenly loved this life so much as to shrink back from trusting the God he had previously claimed.  I am certain He entered the presence of Jesus to a smile and a hug, and those words we all hope to hear one day — “Well done, thou good and faithful servant…” (Matthew 25:21).

There is a GoFundMe page set up in remembrance of Micah and to support the Drye family.  You can get there by clicking this link.  And please join with me in praying for Meghan Drye, her family, our fellow Americans where so many stories just like this are playing out, and for all those first responders stepping up and doing God’s work in the worst of conditions.
