Trump Makes Major Warning To John Deere

President Trump has made a major warning to agricultural machinery manufacturer John Deere.

During a recent roundtable hosted by the Protecting America Initiative, Trump warned that he would impose a 200% tariff on John Deere machinery if the manufacturer moved production to Mexico.

Trump stated, “I’m just notifying John Deere right now: If you do that, we’re putting a 200% tariff on everything that you want to sell into the United States.”

“It’s hurting our farmers. It’s hurting our manufacturing,” added Trump.

Here’s what CNBC reported:

Former President Donald Trump on Monday threatened John Deere with a 200% tariff if the agricultural manufacturer moves production to factories in Mexico.

“They’ve announced a few days ago that they’re going to move a lot of their manufacturing business to Mexico,” the Republican nominee said at a policy roundtable in Smithton, Pennsylvania, hosted by the Protecting America Initiative.

“I’m just notifying John Deere right now: If you do that, we’re putting a 200% tariff on everything that you want to sell into the United States,” said Trump, who has made tariffs a key focus of his campaign’s economic policy.

John Deere has announced that it plans to shift production of some of its models to Mexico, a move that has resulted in layoffs at facilities in Iowa.

“It’s hurting our farmers. It’s hurting our manufacturing,” Trump said Monday.

Reached by CNBC for comment, a John Deere spokesperson pointed out a page on its website titled “John Deere’s Commitment To U.S. Manufacturing,” where it touts its investments in American factories and workers.

The page also said, “In order to position our U.S. factories to undertake these highly value-additive activities it is sometimes necessary to move less complex operations, such as cab assembly, to other locations.”

Per Reuters:

Donald Trump said on Monday he would slap a 200% tariff on John Deere’s (DE.N), opens new tab imports into the United States if the company moved production to Mexico as planned, comments that hit the agricultural equipment manufacturer’s share price.

Earlier this year, John Deere announced that it was laying off hundreds of employees in the Midwest and increasing its production capacity in Mexico, a decision that upset workers and some political leaders.

“As you know, they’ve announced a few days ago that they are going to move a lot of their manufacturing business to Mexico,” Trump said at an event held in western Pennsylvania. “I am just notifying John Deere right now that if you do that, we are putting a 200% tariff on everything that you want to sell into the United States.”

The Republican presidential candidate has frequently said he would slap automakers that move their production to Mexico with a 200% tariff, but this appears to be the first time he has extended that threat to an agricultural equipment company.
