Although she still hasn’t agreed to a solo interview since becoming the Democratic Party’s presidential nominee, Kamala Harris does deliver some heavily scripted speeches in controlled environments as part of her campaign.
During recent remarks about labor unions, many people noticed that she seemed to have adopted an odd accent that differed from her typical speaking voice.
Fox News White House Correspondent Peter Doocy pressed Karine Jean-Pierre on the issue during a recent White House press conference.
According to the Daily Caller:
“Since when does the vice president have what sounds like a southern accent?” Doocy asked.
“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” Jean-Pierre replied. “I mean, this is … I mean, do you hear the question that you’re [asking], do you think people seriously think that this is an important question? Do you know what they care about? They care about the economy, they care about lowering costs, they care about healthcare, that’s what Americans care about. That’s what they want to hear. They want to hear.”
Jean-Pierre said even hearing the question “sounds so ridiculous,” to which Doocy asked whether Harris talks that way in meetings at the White House.
“Is that how she talks in meetings here?” Doocy continued.
ADVERTISEMENT“I’m just … Peter, we’re moving on. We’re so moving on,” Jean-Pierre said while calling on another reporter.
Jean-Pierre might have brushed off the question, but plenty of other people continued to discuss Harris’ manufactured accent on social media, including many who compared her to a classic cartoon character:

Others noted that this wasn’t an isolated incident:

Comrade Kamala has debuted yet another brand new accent in her campaign.🤦♀️
⚠️Which one was worse?⚠️
✅️Option 1.) Her fake ghetto "twunny twunny foah" in Atlanta, Georgia?

It also evoked some comparisons to the last Democratic woman to earn the party’s nomination:

Here’s how Fox News Channel’s Jesse Watters covered the development, per Newsweek:
A Fox News host’s suggestion that Kamala Harris changes her accent depending on the audience she’s addressing has sparked uproar online.
The vice president spoke in Detroit and Pittsburgh during campaign events on Labor Day. Snippets from the two speeches have been circulating on social media, with several MAGA supporters accusing Harris of changing her accent.
Fox News’ Jesse Watters said: “Kamala was raised by an Indian mother in Canada, but now she sounds like Fani Willis.” He was referring to the district attorney of Fulton County, Georgia, who has a traditional Southern accent.
Below is the full exchange between Doocy and Jean-Pierre:
