Gov. Gavin Newsom Looks To Ban Meme Videos After Elon Musk Shares Kamala Harris Video

Shortly after, billionaire Elon Musk shared an edited campaign video of Kamala Harris, Gov. Gavin Newsom has called for edited campaign videos to be made illegal.

Newsom, in response to Musk sharing the video, wrote on X, “Manipulating a voice in an “ad” like this one should be illegal.”

“I’ll be signing a bill in a matter of weeks to make sure it is,” added Newsom.

In response to Newsom’s post, Elon made a joke and responded to Newsom by writing, “I checked with renowned world authority, Professor Suggon Deeznutz, and he said parody is legal in America.”

Elon Musk nuked Gavin Newsom with a truly incredible tweet.

Musk has been known to troll people on social media, and the man is legitimately a funny guy. Not only is the founder of Tesla and SpaceX and owner of X, but he has legit comedy skills.

He put those skills on display late Sunday night when he obliterated the California governor with a very simple tweet.

Newsom tweeted that he’s going to sign a bill that makes it illegal to modify someone’s voice for an ad in response to a clearly fake Kamala Harris video.

The video in question is obviously not real and a joke. Yet, Newsom apparently wants to outlaw it. Musk wasn’t having any of it.

“I checked with renowned world authority, Professor Suggon Deeznutz, and he said parody is legal in America,” the billionaire tech titan responded.

Per AP:

A manipulated video that mimics the voice of Vice President Kamala Harris saying things she did not say is raising concerns about the power of artificial intelligence to mislead with Election Day about three months away.

The video gained attention after tech billionaire Elon Musk shared it on his social media platform X on Friday evening without explicitly noting it was originally released as parody.

The video uses many of the same visuals as a real ad that Harris, the likely Democratic president nominee, released last week launching her campaign. But the video swaps out the voice-over audio with another voice that convincingly impersonates Harris.

“I, Kamala Harris, am your Democrat candidate for president because Joe Biden finally exposed his senility at the debate,” the voice says in the video. It claims Harris is a “diversity hire” because she is a woman and a person of color, and it says she doesn’t know “the first thing about running the country.” The video retains “Harris for President” branding. It also adds in some authentic past clips of Harris.
