Democrat NYC Councilwoman Arrested After BITING Police Officer


A Democrat New York City Councilwoman has been arrested after biting a police officer during a protest.

Councilwoman Susan Zhuang, 38, has been charged with “second and third-degree assault, resisting arrest, obstruction of governmental administration, unlawful assembly, disorderly conduct and second-degree harassment.”

Zhuang allegedly bit the officer while protesting against a men’s shelter that is being planned in the Bensonhurst neighborhood.

A video that has gone viral shows Zhuang biting Chief of Patrol Frank DiGiacomo and even drawing blood.

A New York City Council member who was arrested during a protest on Wednesday spoke out about the incident on Thursday.

Councilwoman Susan Zhuang, 38, is accused of biting an NYPD chief during a protest against against a proposed men’s shelter in the Bensonhurst neighborhood.

On Thursday, she was greeted at a community center in Gravesend by hundreds of people chanting her name and supporting her. She told the crowd she doesn’t think she should have been arrested in the first place.

Zhuang is seen in photos and video pushing up against a police barricade, and then according to NYPD, opening up her mouth to bite an officer – Chief of Patrol Frank DiGiacomo – and drawing blood.

She is charged with second and third-degree assault, resisting arrest, obstruction of governmental administration, unlawful assembly, disorderly conduct and second-degree harassment. She was arraigned in court Wednesday evening and released on her own recognizance.

New York City Councilwoman Susan Zhuang was met with a crowd of supporters cheering her on after she was released from jail late Wednesday following her arrest during a Brooklyn protest in which she allegedly bit the deputy chief of the NYPD.

Zhuang, a Democrat representing the 43rd district, was protesting the construction of a new homeless shelter at the corner of 25th Avenue and 86th Street in Bensonhurst at the time of her arrest Wednesday.

NBC New York obtained video of the scene, which shows a multitude of protesters demonstrating in front of the construction site. Additionally, videos circulating online seem to show a group of protesters trying to dismantle the barricade, while another video allegedly shows the councilwoman arrested and cuffed to the metal barricade gate.

Zhuang allegedly bit Deputy Chief Frank DiGiacomo on the arm as officers attempted to arrest her and other protesters. A senior police official described it as a “pretty nasty bite.”

Prior to her arrest, Zhuang posted on X a video of protesters asking to see the permits for the construction of the homeless shelter, alleging there are none.
