Here is the police’s official statement regarding the incident:

The New York Post reported:

One person is dead after a Columbus, Ohio police officer helping out with security at the Republican National Convention shot a suspicious person near the GOP event’s headquarters.

A witness at the scene told The Post that the man was wielding two knives, swinging them toward police just before the fatal shooting.

The victim’s brother told The Post that the man was homeless.

The Columbus Dispatch has more details:

A Columbus police officer is believed to have shot and killed someone while working in Milwaukee as part of the security efforts surrounding the Republican National Convention.

Brian Steel, president of the Fraternal Order of Police Capital City Lodge No. 9, said details are limited, but he was contacted about a shooting in Milwaukee involving a Columbus police officer.

Several dozen Columbus officers, including the Division of Police’s dialogue team, are in Milwaukee, as are officers from other cities around the country, to assist with security.

Columbus police have sent officers to other large-scale events around the country in the past, including several presidential inaugurations.

According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the shooting occurred near North 14th and West Vliet streets outside of the security perimeter for the Republican National Convention. The Journal Sentinel has reporters at the scene.

The Journal Sentinel reported that the person police shot has died. Steel said no Columbus officers were hurt in the incident. Additional details were not immediately available.

Multiple sources have told The Dispatch that dialogue officers were not involved in the shooting.
