Another ‘Squad’ Member Potentially To Lose Congressional Seat? Trails Primary Opponent By Double Digits

Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO), a member of the progressive “Squad” in Congress, faces a brutal challenge in her Democratic primary.

A new poll shows Bush trailing St. Louis prosecuting attorney Wesley Bell by 23 points in the August 6th primary for Missouri’s 1st Congressional District.

According to the New York Post, Bell led the poll 56% to 33%.

11% were undecided or backed other candidates.

From the New York Post:

It’s the latest troubling sign for the liberal “Squad” after New York Rep. Jamaal Bowman was soundly defeated by moderate Westchester County Executive George Latimer in a June 25 Democratic primary in the 16th District stretching from Co-Op City in the Bronx to the leafy suburbs of Westchester County.

Bowman was the first member of the Squad — which includes Bronx/Queens Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) — to be defeated in a party primary.

As in the Bowman-Latimer race, the Israel-Hamas war has figured prominently and brought out the contrasts between the candidates for the Missouri seat.

Like Bowman, Bush has been a staunch critic of Israel’s war tactics against Hamas in Gaza.

Bell said he supports Israel’s right to defend itself and target the Hamas militia for its sneak Oct. 7, 2023, attack against the Jewish state. Pro-Israel Democrats are backing Bell.

“Cori Bush has wasted her time in Congress to focus on her own fame in ‘The Squad’ — while her constituents suffer,” said Pastor Marc Little, spokesman for the anti-Bush CCA Action Fund, a super PAC.

“This poll proves St. Louis wants a representative who will champion our community and its prosperity and safety, and who will defend America — not a Cori Bush who wants to tear it all down.”

The 23-point lead for Bell is a stark contrast to the prior survey that had the two candidates at a one-point margin.

The survey of 400 registered voters in the Missouri 1st District by The Mellman Group put Bush at 42 per cent, behind Bell’s 43 per cent.

The Mellman Group is the same pollster that correctly predicted the 16.8-point drubbing handed to Jamaal Bowman on Tuesday.

The poll in April gave Westchester County Executive George Latimer a 52 to 35 per cent lead over Bowman.

Bush is suddenly in a street fight with Bell after looking like a sure thing in January when she was ahead 45 per cent to 29 per cent.

However, the poll is not run by a nonpartisan pollster, as Mark Mellman is the chairman of DMFI PAC – a lobby group trying to elect pro-Israel Democrats.

‘As voters learn more about Cori Bush’s record in Washington opposing the Biden-Harris agenda, they are choosing Wesley Bell to represent them in Congress,’ he said of the poll.

There was more bad news in the poll, conducted in June 18 to 22, as there are 11 per cent of respondents undecided with momentum on Bell’s side.
