Trucker Finds 1-Year-Old In Ditch

A truck driver found a 1-year-old in a ditch off an interstate in Louisiana.

The discovery by the trucker driver comes a day after the 1-year-old’s 4-year-old brother was found dead near the same interstate.

Investigators believe the children were abandoned by their mother around the same time storms hit the area.

The boy’s mother has since been found and faces murder charges.

Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Stitch Guillory stated, “We look at this 1-year-old as our miracle baby, (because) he was still alive.”

A truck driver found a 1-year-old alive in a ditch off an interstate highway in Louisiana this week, a day after the boy’s 4-year-old brother was found dead near the same freeway in what investigators think was a case of abandonment around the time tropical storm conditions hit the area, authorities said.

The boys’ mother, a Louisiana resident, has been arrested in Mississippi and faces murder and other charges, accused of abandoning the children in Louisiana, authorities said Thursday.

A Louisiana sheriff, who says he believes the 1-year-old spent two days along Interstate 10, including while Hurricane Beryl or its weaker iterations battered the western Gulf Coast region with rain and strong wind – is praising the truck driver for seeing the child and stopping to pick up him up Tuesday.

“We look at this 1-year-old as our miracle baby, (because) he was still alive,” Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Stitch Guillory said this week. “This kid spent two days out in the weather on the side of the highway. … Thank God that trucker (saw) him.”

Per ABC 15:

A 1-year-old is being called a “miracle baby” after surviving two days alone in a Louisiana roadside ditch during Hurricane Beryl-driven storms.

The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office had been looking for the baby since July 8, when they discovered the body of his 4-year-old brother floating in a lake behind an I-10 welcome center. Upon investigating the death, detectives discovered the boy had last been seen Saturday with his 1-year-old brother and their mother, 25-year-old Aaliyah N. Jack.

During a news conference Tuesday, Calcasieu Parish Sheriff Gary “Stitch” Guillory said authorities were preparing to search the lake for the 1-year-old when they received a call at 9 a.m. from a truck driver who had spotted the baby crawling in a ditch off I-10.

Deputies arrived and positively identified the child as the missing 1-year-old. Sheriff Guillory said the baby had bug bites but was in good condition after surviving intermittent heavy rain and wind brought to the Texas-Louisiana border by Hurricane Beryl.
