Nearly All AT&T Customers Data Stolen By Hackers

AT&T reported in a new regulatory filing that a hacker could steal texts and calls from “nearly all” of its customers.

The telecommunications company reported that a hacker “claimed to have unlawfully accessed and copied AT&T call logs” on April 19.

According to Fox Business, the hacker illegally obtained data from nearly all AT&T customers by gaining access to an AT&T workspace on a third-party cloud platform.

Once illegally gaining access to the AT&T workspace, the hacker “exfiltrated files containing AT&T records of customer call and text interactions between May 1 and Oct. 31.”

Here’s what Fox Business reported:

AT&T said in a regulatory filing Friday that a hacker was able to steal the records of calls and texts for “nearly all” of its customers.

The company launched an investigation after finding out on April 19 that a hacker “claimed to have unlawfully accessed and copied AT&T call logs,” the company said in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

The hacker illegally gained access to a AT&T workspace on a third-party cloud platform and exfiltrated files containing AT&T records of customer call and text interactions that occurred between May 1 and Oct. 31, 2022, AT&T said in the filing. Data was also compromised for a “very small number” of customers on Jan. 2, 2023, AT&T said in a separate release.

The data specifically includes records of calls and texts of nearly all of AT&T’s cellular customers, customers of mobile virtual network operators using AT&T’s wireless network, as well as AT&T’s landline customers who interacted with those cellular numbers, the company said.

Per CNN:

The call and text message records from mid-to-late 2022 of tens of millions of AT&T cellphone customers and many non-AT&T customers were exposed in a massive data breach, the telecom company revealed Friday.

AT&T said the compromised data includes the telephone numbers of “nearly all” of its cellular customers and the customers of wireless providers that use its network between May 1, 2022 and October 31, 2022.

The stolen logs also contain a record of every number AT&T customers called or texted – including customers of other wireless networks – the number of times they interacted, and the call duration.

Importantly, AT&T said the stolen data did not include the contents of calls and text messages nor the time of those communications.

The records of a “very small number” of customers from January 2, 2023, were also implicated, AT&T said.

“We have an ongoing investigation into the AT&T breach and we’re coordinating with our law enforcement partners,” the FCC said on social media platform X.
