Fire At California Egg-Laying Farm Kills 150,000+ Chickens

A fire at an egg-laying facility in Merced County, California, killed over 150,000 chickens.

Merced County Cal Fire firefighters responded to a fire Sunday evening at the J.S. West Milling Company just south of Livingston.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

More than 150,000 chickens were killed when a large fire broke out at an egg-laying facility in Merced County, California.

The fire was contained sometime after midnight.

Merced Sun-Star reports:

Fire officials said the first firefighters arrived on scene to find heavy smoke and fire rapidly spreading through a roughly 50,000 square foot structure occupied by hens. The fire rapidly developed within the structure and killing the hens, according to fire officials.

Fire crews focused efforts on preventing the fire from spreading to adjacent structures.

“Fire department personnel were able to protect four other structures that were exposed to the blaze,” said Wynne.

A total of about 35 fire personnel responded to the blaze including seven fire engines and 10 water tenders from Merced County, according to Wynne. A Madera County Support Unit assisted.

Wynne said a heavy fuel load inside the structure made suppression efforts difficult and it took firefighters about six hours to contain the fire. There were no reported injuries to firefighters or civilians.

Merced Golden Wire News stated the fire killed 170,000 chickens.

At least 10 different Merced County Fire Departments were working Sunday evening to put out a massive fire at JS West Hatchery in Merced County.

The fire began around 7:40 p.m. at a chicken egg-laying facility located near Bell Drive and Dwight Way, Brian a

Merced County Battalion Chief told Merced County News.

When the first fire unit arrived, the barn was about 50% engulfed. Adjoining chicken barns were not affected.

Resources were used till around midnight. Madera County Fire Department 19 provided water and ice to the firefighters battling the fire.

No injuries to any firefighters or workers were reported.

The deadly fire follows reports of a Colorado poultry farm culling 1.8 million chickens after bird flu was detected at the Weld County egg-laying operation.
