It was supposed to be Joe Biden’s opportunity to assuage the fears of fellow Democrats about the cognitive impairment on display during last week’s debate, but an interview on Friday didn’t seem to make things any better.
ABC News panelists dug into the president following the interview, which aired on the same network.
As Fox News reported:
“Look, Biden looked better and certainly more coherent than he looked during the debate, but there’s nothing in this interview that is calming nerves of jittery Democrats who fear that Joe Biden is on a trajectory to lose this race, to lose to Donald Trump,” ABC News chief Washington correspondent Jonathan Karl told Stephanopoulos after the interview.
“In fact, for some of those people, the interview is raising new concerns, particularly the fact that he is unwilling or unaware of the fact that he is in a dire situation here regarding the campaign, that he is losing, in the view of many Democrats and frankly in the polls you cited, that he is losing to Donald Trump,” he said.
Karl added it was “alarming” when Biden said he would be content with a hypothetical defeat against former President Trump as long as he as he “gave it [his] all,” telling Stephanopoulos that a Biden ally reacted to him with a “wow.”
“The bottom line here: there was nothing in this interview that will force Joe Biden out of the race… but there’s also nothing in this interview that will calm the nerves of Democrats who are saying it’s time for him to get out,” Karl added.
Clips from the interview soon sparked significant social media commentary:
The best line of the night in that bizarre interview @JoeBiden did was that he said he was the one who created NATO.
NATO was created back in 1949. Joe Biden was about six years old, freshly out of diapers.
How ironic that he's back in diapers again.https://t.co/CrwdDC0wqU pic.twitter.com/TZCysj2Mx5

This ABC interview was supposed to shut down talk of Biden’s decline

I’m not sure people realize how BAD that George Stephanopoulos interview was for Biden.
The way he answered that question-
– National Security Council?
– NYT had me down 10 points?
– He lied 28 times?
– The way the debate ran?THE MAN CANNOT KEEP A COHERENT THOUGHT! pic.twitter.com/jGFGkNEGSi

Even former Obama adviser David Alexrod was convinced that Biden failed to achieve his goal of reassuring Democratic voters.
According to the New York Post:
David Axelrod, the architect of Obama’s two successful presidential campaigns, called the Friday sitdown “sad” to watch.
“When George Stephanopoulos asked him if he’d be willing to take a cognitive test, he said, ‘I take a cognitive test every day.’ Well, the fact is, that may be true, but 75% of the American people think he fails,” Axelrod said in post-interview analysis on CNN Friday.
While Biden again rejected calls to leave the race, saying only the “Lord Almighty” could make him, Axelrod said that wasn’t enough as polls show the incumbent slipping nationally and in battleground states.
“And some somebody really needs to be honest with him about it. It’s not, it can’t be the good Lord, but it should be people who love and care for him and his closest advisers, his portrait of where he is in this race doesn’t comport with reality,” Axelrod said.
If you want to subject yourself to the entire interview, here’s a clip:
Here is the full Biden-Stephanopoulos interview. This might be even worse than the debate since this was supposed to be his recovery interview. He fails to answer the basic questions, says nothing of substance, and to the informed audience member, says things that are either… pic.twitter.com/x80g6PnfHW
