Russian President Vladimir Putin said he takes Donald Trump’s comments on wanting to end the war in Ukraine “completely seriously.”
While speaking at a news conference in Kazakhstan, Putin was asked about Trump’s statements that he could quickly end the conflict if he’s president again.
“The fact that Mr. Trump, as a presidential candidate, says that he is ready and wants to stop the war in Ukraine, we take this completely seriously,” Putin said.
“I haven’t seen his ideas on how exactly he’s going to do that. And that is the key question. But I have no doubt that he says that sincerely and we support that,” he continued.

The Washington Post reported in April that Trump had privately spoken about the option of allowing Putin to keep Crimea, which Moscow annexed from Ukraine in 2014, and the Donbas area – which Russian forces partially control – in return for peace, something Trump’s campaign has not confirmed.

Putin said last month that Russia would end the war only if Kyiv agreed to drop its NATO ambitions and hand over the entirety of four provinces claimed by Moscow, demands Kyiv swiftly rejected as tantamount to surrender.
Putin said constructive dialogue between Moscow and Washington was impossible during a heated U.S. presidential election campaign and that Moscow would wait for the result and see what the new leadership does.
Vladimir Putin has said he believes Donald Trump is sincere about ending the war in Ukraine, but does not know what his plan would involve.

Trump previously said he could resolve the conflict between Russia and Ukraine in one day if he were president.
However, Russia’s United Nations ambassador expressed his doubts that was achievable.

When asked to respond to the claim from the presumptive Republican nominee, Vassily Nebenzia told reporters Monday that “the Ukrainian crisis cannot be solved in one day.”
At a CNN town hall in May 2023, Trump said: “They’re dying, Russians and Ukrainians. I want them to stop dying. And I’ll have that done — I’ll have that done in 24 hours.” He said that would happen after he met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin. And he keeps repeating the claim on the campaign trail.
During last week’s debate with President Joe Biden, Trump claimed, “If we had a real president, a president that knew — that was respected by Putin … he would have never invaded Ukraine.”
ADVERTISEMENTTrump campaign’s communications director Steven Cheung said Tuesday that “a top priority in his second term will be to quickly negotiate an end to the Russia-Ukraine war.”
“Trump believes European nations should be paying more of the cost of the conflict,” Cheung said.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said in an interview he would like to know Trump’s plan for ending the war.

Zelenskyy said he wanted to understand whether after Nov. 5 — when Americans go to the polls — Ukraine would still have the powerful support of the U.S., or be left to fend for itself.
“They can’t plan my life and the life of our people, our children,” the Ukrainian president said. “My message is if they have the plan, it can be not public because of the elections but I think we have to know before to prepare.”
ADVERTISEMENTTrump said at last week’s debate with Biden that he doesn’t regard as acceptable Putin’s ultimatum that Ukraine surrender four of its regions to Russia to end the war.
He said, however, that he is mulling a deal whereby NATO commits to no further eastward expansion — specifically into Ukraine and Georgia — and negotiates with the Russian president over how much Ukrainian territory Moscow can keep, officials and advisors in contact with Trump told POLITICO.
