Thomas Massie Proposes New Constitutional Amendment

Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) has proposed a constitutional amendment, stating the “right of the people to grow food and to purchase food from the source of their choice shall not be infringed.”

“The right of the people to grow food and to purchase food from the source of their choice shall not be infringed, and Congress shall make no law regulating the production and distribution of food products which do not move across state lines,” Massie stated Saturday.

According to Food Safety News, Massie’s proposed constitutional amendment was inspired by Pennsylvania farmer Amos Miller’s fight against government officials.

Per Food Safety News:

The latest inspired by Amos Miller is a proposed amendment to the U.S. Constitution by the “Food Freedom” Rep. Thomas Massie, R-KY.

“The right of the people to grow food and to purchase food from the source of their choice shall not be infringed, and Congress shall make no law regulating the production and distribution of food products which do not move across state lines,” according to the unlikely amendment by Massie.

Constitutional amendments require a two-thirds vote from both Houses of Congress and, even then, do not pass until an amendment is ratified by the legislatures of three-fourths of the states.

At the same time, Miller is getting support from many blogs and podcasts on social media, including from Donald Trump Jr. and Massie.

Miller is currently prohibited from commercial sales of raw milk or raw milk products. Raw milk is not pasteurized. His attorneys have countered by asking the court for permission to conduct sales out state.

Miller primarily wants to get the AG’s civil action against him dismissed. His attorneys are accused of making “indecipherable” objections to make a case.

“As our federal government cracks down on food production in ways that will make it harder to grow and purchase food, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) is leading the fight to stop them,” The Blaze wrote.

“Right now, we’ve descended into this corporatocracy where four companies control all the meat, a few cooperatives control all the milk,” Massie told the outlet.

From The Blaze:

One Amish farmer in particular is being harassed over his milk and beef production. Massie believes his amendment can stop it.

“The right of the people to grow food and to purchase food from the source of their choice shall not be infringed, and Congress shall make no law regulating the production and distribution of food products, which do not move across state lines,” Massie says, reading his amendment.

“It’s a very tight and compact amendment, but it covers a lot of things in there,” he says.
