Aftershock Hits NY-NJ Area Following 4.8 Earthquake

An aftershock hit the NY-NJ area Friday evening after a historic 4.8 earthquake rocked the northeast Friday morning.

The aftershock occurred around 6 p.m. Friday evening.

“A 4.8-magnitude earthquake shook New York City and the Tri-State area Friday morning, followed by a magnitude 4.0 aftershock later that evening,” FOX 5 NY writes.

“New Jersey just experienced an aftershock. Please follow the emergency guidance below and avoid calling 911 unless you have an actual emergency,” New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy said.

CBS New York reports:

From The Hill:

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported Friday evening that a New Jersey aftershock with a 4.0 magnitude happened at 5:59 p.m., with its epicenter a little over four miles southwest of Gladstone.

The sizeable evening aftershock followed smaller aftershocks that occurred earlier in the day.

“A 4.0 magnitude aftershock from this morning’s earthquake in New Jersey just occurred. We are continuing to review critical infrastructure and there are no reports of significant damage at this time,” New York Gov. Kathy Hochul said.

“A second strong magnitude 4.0 aftershock earthquake has just struck northern New Jersey, with numerous people feeling it across New York City and surrounding areas in New Jersey,” Rawsalerts wrote.

Many social media users reported feeling the aftershock:

FOX 5 NY noted:

The U.S. Geological Survey reported a quake at 10:23 a.m. with a preliminary magnitude of 4.8 centered near Whitehouse Station in Hunterdon County, New Jersey. About an hour later, a 2.0-magnitude quake was reported in nearby Bedminster, and the USGC continues to report aftershocks.

Then, just before 6 p.m., a magnitude 4.0 aftershock hit the region, with the epicenter near Gladstone in New Jersey.

Figures indicated that more than 42 million people might have felt the quake. Check out the USGS interactive map to see if your area was affected.

In a press conference Friday, New York Governor Kathy Hochul said “an earthquake of this magnitude has not been felt in New York since 2011.”

The FOX 5 NY newsroom on Manhattan’s Upper East Side felt shaking and received reports of a quake from our crews in Queens and Long Island. People in Baltimore and Philadelphia also reported feeling the ground shake.
