Arnold Schwarzenegger Fitted For Pacemaker

Actor and former California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger revealed he was fitted for a pacemaker after previously having three open heart surgeries.

“Last Monday, I had surgery to become a little bit more of a machine: I got a pacemaker,” Schwarzenegger said, according to People.

“I want to thank my whole team at the Cleveland Clinic. All of the doctors and nurses took amazing care of me and made the surgery as painless as possible,” he added.

People reports:

Schwarzenegger had two surgeries in 1997 to replace his pulmonic valve and aortic valve, which would last 12 to 15 years. He went in for surgery to get both replaced again in 2018 and 2020. He explained that scar tissue from his last surgery caused him to have an irregular heartbeat and he was told to monitor it closely.

“I stayed in touch with my medical team and visited in person at least once a year to get a full check-up and see how my heart was doing,” he said. “That’s life with a genetic heart issue. But you won’t hear me complaining.”

The Terminator star said he’s only here because he was “very diligent about staying in touch with my doctors and listening to them,” noting that his mother died in 1998 after not getting the valve replacement surgery she needed.

“I went in for my normal checkup at the beginning of March on my way to the Arnold Sports Festival, and they did a full series of tests,” he said on the show.

Schwarzenegger’s doctor later told him that based on his results, he needed to get the pacemaker as soon as possible, especially if he wanted to be healthy enough to film season 2 of FUBAR six weeks later.

“But with all of those surgeries, my doctors told me it was more important than ever to stay on top of the situation, and I checked in all of the time, sharing heart rate information from home. We knew the heartbeat was irregular, and my fantastic team watched it like a hawk,” Schwarzenegger said, according to Daily Mail.

“They told me that they had a pacemaker implanted, it was a quick recovery, and their energy levels were back to what they were used to,” he added.

From Daily Mail:

Arnold reassured his fans that he is recovering well, saying: ‘First of all, I want you to know I’m doing great!

‘I had my surgery on Monday, and by Friday, I was already at a big environmental event with my friend and fellow fitness crusader Jane Fonda.

‘By the way, when we talk about exercise being the only magic pill to slow down aging, look at Jane. She’s ten years older than me, turning 87 this year!

‘Nobody would ever have thought I started the week with a surgery.

‘I want to thank my whole team at the Cleveland Clinic. All of the doctors and nurses took amazing care of me and made the surgery as painless as possible.

He continued; ‘They also advised me that it was time to go through with this because some scar tissue from my previous surgery had made my heartbeat irregular.

‘It had been like that for a few years, so I stayed in touch with my medical team and visited in person at least once a year to get a full check-up and see how my heart was doing.

The New York Post reported in 2021:

Arnold Schwarzenegger says “Hasta la vista” to anti-maskers as COVID-19 regulations return amid the Delta variant.

The “Terminator” film icon and former governor of California spoke via YouTube Wednesday to urge “schmucks” to follow the rules and get vaccinated to “protect your fellow Americans.”

“There is a virus here — it kills people,” Schwarzenegger said, “and the only way we prevent it is get vaccinated, get masks, do social distancing, washing your hands all the time, and not just to think about ‘Well, my freedom is being kind of disturbed here.’ No, screw your freedom.”

The 74-year-old actor was part of a panel with CNN’s Alex Vindman and Bianna Golodryga to discuss misinformation and COVID-19 policy.

“Yeah, you have the freedom to wear no mask — but you know something?” Schwarzenegger continued. “You’re a schmuck for not wearing a mask. You are supposed to protect your fellow Americans around you.”

“Schwarzenegger advocates for vaccine with ‘Terminator’ quote. Former California governor and ‘The Terminator’ actor Arnold Schwarzenegger encouraged others to follow his lead and get vaccinated,” CTV News wrote in January 2021.
