The explosion occurred during an annual training exercise held by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department SWAT team. The department’s bomb squad was conducting the exercise at the Jerry Crowe Regional Tactical Training Facility.

The explosion occurred indoors just before 1 p.m., he said, and the blast injured 16 SWAT team members.
One member sustained a leg injury which required surgery but was non-life-threatening, Gonzalez said. Another person sustained an injury to his back and another to the leg, but did not require surgery, Gonzalez added.
Another 13 people were taken to local hospitals after complaints of dizziness and ringing in their ears.
Of the 13, many were treated and released, Gonzalez said. The events leading up to the explosion were unclear. The cause of the blast is still under investigation.

Despite the FBI operating the facility, the FBI did not have anything to do with the explosion, which was reported by OCSD Sergeant Frank Gonzalez.

Footage from the scene showed investigators combing the area in protective suits as they examined a large, red robot positioned outside of that building. Debris could be seen near the entrance to the building.
The cause of the blast remains unclear, though authorities have launched an investigation into the events leading up to the incident.
The facility is no stranger to training exercises as it hosts a number of firearms training and qualifications tests for both the bureau and the local law enforcement agencies.
While the FBI was not related to the event, they will be leading the investigation behind the explosion as it occurred in their facility.
