Last November, Deadspin came under fire after one of their journalist’s attacked a 9-year-old Kansas City Chiefs fan for cultural appropriation and supposed “blackface.”
In reality, the young Chiefs fan — who has Native American heritage — had put on a headdress and painted his face with half brown/half red war paint for the game.
NEW: Deadspin has been sold by G/O Media and has fired their entire staff.
The media is going broke in real time.

The boy’s family had launched a lawsuit for defaming their son.
DEADSPIN is a fake news media company that falsely accused a 9 year old boy of wearing blackface at a Chiefs game.
In response, the boy’s family is now suing them to hell for defamation.
Today, Deadspin was forced to lay off their entire staff and sell the company.

The New York Post has more details:
Sports blogging site Deadspin was sold to a European start-up and the entire staff was reportedly fired with barely any notice Monday — just months after the publication was forced to apologize for accusing a young Kansas City Chiefs fan of wearing “blackface.”
Jim Spanfeller, the CEO of parent G/O Media, broke news of the sale and the layoffs in a memo to shocked staff — the latest piece the crumbling company has dumped amid a wave of job cuts in the industry.
“Recently we were approached by the European firm Lineup Publishing expressing interest in purchasing Deadspin to add to their growing media holdings,” Spanfeller said.
Lineup Publishing will “not carry over any of the site’s existing staff and instead build a new team more in line with their editorial vision for the brand,” the CEO added. “While the new owners plan to be reverential to Deadpin’s unique voice, they plan to take a different content approach regarding the site’s overall sports coverage. This unfortunately means that we will be parting ways with those impacted staff members.”
Deadspin, which had been owned by G/O since 2019, was slapped with a lawsuit last month by the family of 9-year-old Chiefs fan Holden Armenta after it accused the boy of wearing “blackface” in a column penned last November.
Axios also commented:
G/O Media, formerly Gizmodo Media Group, has sold sports blogging site Deadspin to European firm Lineup Publishing, a new digital media rollup company, CEO Jim Spanfeller announced in a note to staff Monday.
ADVERTISEMENTWhy it matters: The firm, which was acquired by private equity firm Great Hill Partners in 2019, has been slowly offloading sites as pressure mounts from investors to make a return on its investment.
Details: In the memo, Spanfeller said none of Deadspin’s existing staff will move over with the site as part of the deal and the new owners will “instead build a new team more in line with their editorial vision for the brand.”
- Impacted staffers were notified Monday that they were being let go from G/O Media, marking the third round of cuts at the firm in less than a year.
- Spanfeller said Lineup Publishing approached him about the sale and that the company was not “actively shopping Deadspin.”
- “The rationale behind the decision to sell included a variety of important factors that include the buyer’s editorial plans for the brand, tough competition in the sports journalism sector, and a valuation that reflected a sizable premium from our original purchase price for the site,” Spanfeller wrote in the memo.
- “While the new owners plan to be reverential to Deadpin’s unique voice, they plan to take a different content approach regarding the site’s overall sports coverage,” he added.
