Several people have died after a single-engine plane crashed near Interstate 40 in Nashville, Tennessee.
The crash was reported around 7:44 p.m. Monday near mile marker 202 on I-40 and John C. Tune Airport.
Officials say the pilot requested an emergency landing at the airport, saying they were experiencing engine problems.
Metro Police reportedly said everyone on board the aircraft died in the crash.
“Earlier this evening, a small single-engine airplane with the tail number N422RJ, departing from Huntsville, Alabama, crashed off the eastbound lanes of I-40 in Nashville, Tennessee, resulting in multiple fatalities,” Rawsalerts posted.
“According to reports, the aircraft experienced power and engine failures. The pilot requested emergency clearance to land but wasn’t able to make it to the runway as its destination was in Nashville. The FAA will be investigating the incident,” the post added.

The plane crashed just past the Charlotte Pike exit on I-40. Metro Nashville Fire Department arrived at the scene and witnessed heavy fire, which crews were able to put out quickly while preserving evidence for investigation.
“We are saddened by the loss of souls that were on board, but we are proud of the work that everyone is doing to stabilize this incident and to make sure that there were no additional casualties,” said Metro Fire Department Public Information Officer Kendra Loney.
Loney said there were pieces of the plane scattered around the scene, but crews quickly gathered them and made sure it was safe for those driving by.
The Federal Aviation Administration says they do not yet know the total number of people on board the plane when it crashed. They are investigating the incident, along with the National Transportation Safety Board.

Per CNN:
It’s still unclear how many people were inside the plane, which exploded into flames upon impact, Nashville Fire Department spokesperson Kendra Loney said.
“That impact was catastrophic and did not leave any survivors,” Loney said.
Witnesses reported the plane appeared to be “obviously in distress as it was coming over the interstate” and before it crashed into a grassy area behind a Costco alongside I-40 East, Aaron said.

Officials are still working to identify the deceased and determine where the plane originated from, according to Aaron.
