Nikki Haley Finally Wins A GOP Primary, Trump Responds

Former South Carolina governor and United Nations ambassador Nikki Haley captured her first GOP primary victory Sunday evening.

However, Haley’s victory proves she’s deeply entrenched in the D.C. swamp.

Haley won the Washington D.C. Republican primary, defeating Trump by a vote of 62.9% to 33.2%.

NBC News reports:

Haley, who won the primary over former President Donald Trump, has for weeks pledged to stay in the race through Super Tuesday, when 15 states and American Samoa will hold nominating contests. Trump is dominating in nearly all of those states in most public polling and is expected to extend his commanding delegate lead.

Haley took 63% of the GOP primary vote to 33% for Trump. Just over 2,000 Washington Republicans cast ballots. Because Haley got more than half of the vote, she came away with the District’s 19 delegates.

Washington’s moderate set of Republicans, many of whom work in politics or government, are seen as vastly different from those in other early states, like South Carolina and Iowa, which set up a scenario in which Haley had her first legitimate chance to notch a victory. Trump got just 14% of the vote in Washington’s 2016 primary.

What does Haley winning the D.C. Republican primary tell you?

From POLITICO:

Haley defeated Donald Trump in the Washington, D.C. Republican primary, a contest that took place over the weekend in a downtown hotel just steps away from the heart of D.C.’s lobbying hub. Haley carried nearly 63 percent of the vote, according to D.C. party officials.

Haley’s victory came after she was crushed by Trump in caucuses in Missouri and Idaho and at a Republican convention in Michigan on Saturday. Trump is cruising to the GOP nomination and is favored to win primaries across 16 Super Tuesday states this week.

But the GOP electorate in D.C. — where Republicans make up just 5 percent of registered voters — is hardly representative of the conservative base found in most other parts of the country.

“This universe is a little more sophisticated than just about any universe in any other state,” said Patrick Mara, chair of the D.C. Republican Party. “I listen to the political podcasts in the morning. I read the newsletters throughout the day. That’s probably, like, half the people showing up at this.”

Dan Schuberth, who runs a trade association in downtown D.C. and supported Haley in the primary, described his fellow D.C. Republicans as “a pretty unique electorate,” perhaps the only in the country where many of the voters personally know the people working on one or both of the campaigns.

“I purposely stayed away from the D.C. Vote because it is the ‘Swamp,’ with very few delegates, and no upside. Birdbrain spent all of her time, money and effort there. Over the weekend we won Missouri, Idaho, and Michigan – BIG NUMBERS – Complete destruction of a very weak opponent. The really big numbers will come on Super Tuesday. Also, WAY UP ON CROOKED JOE!” Donald Trump commented Sunday night.

“Birdbrain is a loser, record low performance in virtually every State. DeSanctus easily beat her in Iowa for a VERY DISTANT second place, and then she ran up to the podium, before he had a chance to do so, and claimed victory. I enjoy watching the Bird disavow her PLEDGE to the RNC and her statement that she would NEVER run against President Trump (‘A great President’). Well, she ran, she lied, and she LOST BIG!” he added.
