FACT-CHECK: The Upcoming Eclipse Will Cross Over 8 Cities Named Nineveh?

Have you heard about this?

It’s all over social media that the upcoming Solar Eclipse on April 8, 2024 will do something very strange….the path of totality will cross over 8 towns/cities in the USA named “Nineveh/Ninevah”.

Posts like this:

And this:

That’s strange, right?

But is it true?

I decided to research it and I wanted to share those results with you.

I have to admit something first, I had no idea we had any towns or cities in the USA named Nineveh, let alone 8 of them!

How about you?

That’s wild.

But here’s what else is crazy: the claim is mostly true.

According to ChatGPT, the claim is true with one small twist: the 8th city named Ninevah is in Nova Scotia, Canada:

Yes, it’s true that the upcoming Great North American Eclipse on April 8, 2024, will pass over several locations named Nineveh in the United States, as well as a location named Ninevah in Nova Scotia, Canada. The eclipse will indeed be a significant event, crossing over seven specific locations in the U.S. named “Nineveh.” These locations are:

  1. Nineveh, Texas
  2. Nineveh, Missouri
  3. Nineveh, Indiana
  4. Nineveh, Ohio
  5. Nineveh, Pennsylvania
  6. Nineveh, Virginia
  7. Nineveh, New York

Additionally, the eclipse will pass over a location named “Ninevah” in Nova Scotia, Canada, making a total of eight places named after the ancient city.

The eclipse will occur on April 8, 2024, and it’s expected to be one of the most viewed astronomical events in U.S. history. In some of these locations, residents will be able to view a total solar eclipse, while others will experience a partial solar eclipse.

For detailed information about the eclipse, including simulations and viewing information for specific cities like Nineveh, New York, you can visit websites dedicated to the eclipse, such as eclipse2024.org, which offers detailed eclipse viewing information, including times, magnitudes, and where the eclipse will be visible.

I also asked Grok and Grok confirms the same information EXCEPT Grok claims that Ninevah, Canada is not in the Eclipse path:

As best I can tell from looking at maps, Ninevah, Canada is indeed close to the path of the Eclipse but perhaps slightly off.

So I think Grok is more accurate on that detail.

But now I want to take it one layer deeper….

Because here’s what I found even more stunning than that initial claim: not only does the Eclipse pass through 7 US cities named Nineveh, but there are ONLY 7 total US cities named Nineveh in the entire United States.

Yes, you read that right: there are only 7 total and the Eclipse hits them all!

Look, I don’t know what to make of all of this but I don’t think it’s just some random chance or coincidence.

How about you?

So what would be the most logical thing to do next?

Might be good to refresh ourselves on what Nineveh was in the Bible and what importance that story had, don’t you think?

Here’s a good summary:

Nineveh is most famously known in the Bible as the capital of the ancient Assyrian empire and the city to which the prophet Jonah was sent by God to call its people to repentance. The story of Jonah and Nineveh is primarily found in the Book of Jonah in the Old Testament.

Context of Nineveh in the Bible:

  • Location and Significance: Nineveh was a great city located on the eastern bank of the Tigris River, near modern-day Mosul in Iraq. It was one of the oldest and greatest cities in antiquity, known for its wealth, size, and the wickedness of its inhabitants.
  • The Prophet Jonah: The story of Nineveh begins with God calling Jonah, a prophet from Israel, to go to Nineveh and preach against it because of its wickedness. Jonah initially flees from this mission, leading to the famous incident where he is swallowed by a great fish and eventually vomited out after three days and nights.
  • Jonah’s Message and Nineveh’s Repentance: Jonah eventually goes to Nineveh and announces that the city will be overthrown in forty days. Remarkably, the Ninevites believe God’s message delivered through Jonah, leading to a city-wide fast and repentance, from the king down to the common people. They wear sackcloth and sit in ashes as signs of their penitence.
  • God’s Mercy: Moved by their sincere repentance, God shows mercy and spares the city from destruction. This outcome displeases Jonah, who had expected and perhaps desired the city’s downfall. The book ends with God teaching Jonah (and the readers) a lesson about compassion and mercy, emphasizing that God cares for all people, not just the Israelites.

Themes and Lessons:

  • Repentance and Forgiveness: One of the central themes of the Book of Jonah is the power of repentance and God’s willingness to forgive those who turn away from their wickedness.
  • God’s Mercy and Compassion: The story illustrates God’s compassion and mercy, extending even to a city notorious for its wickedness when its people turn to Him in repentance.
  • Universalism of God’s Love: Unlike much of the Old Testament, which focuses on Israel, the story of Jonah highlights the universal scope of God’s concern for all humanity, not just the chosen people.

The narrative of Nineveh in the Bible is a profound story of divine mercy and human repentance, illustrating that no person or city is beyond the reach of God’s grace if they turn towards Him with a sincere heart.

Things are about to get very interesting I think!
