Breaking: RNC Chair Ronna Romney McDaniel Is Resigning

Caught up in controversy surrounding excessive spending and backlash over the GOP’s record of losses under her leadership, Republican National Committee Chair Ronna McDaniel has faced mounting pressure to resign in recent months.

News broke late Tuesday that she has informed GOP presidential primary front-runner Donald Trump that she will be stepping down from the position after the upcoming South Carolina primary election.

According to The New York Times:

Mr. Trump is then likely to promote the chairman of the North Carolina Republican Party, Michael Whatley, as her replacement, according to several people familiar with the discussions. Under the arcana of the committee’s rules, however, Mr. Trump cannot simply install someone. A new election must take place, and Mr. Whatley could face internal party dissent.

Ms. McDaniel has faced months of pressure, a campaign from Trump-allied forces to unseat her and growing dissatisfaction and anxiety in the Trump camp about the strained finances of the R.N.C. as the general election cycle begins early.

Then-candidate Vivek Ramaswamy called on McDaniel to resign during a presidential primary debate in November.

Trump himself has weighed in on the topic in recent days.

As NBC News reported:

During a Newsmax interview at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, Trump was asked whether he thinks McDaniel should step aside. He responded affirmatively, saying: “Well, I think she knows that. I think she understands that.”

McDaniel was at Mar-a-Lago on Monday night, according to a source who saw her there.

Trump, who is seeking a return to the White House, told Fox News on Sunday that “there’ll probably be some changes” at the RNC when he was asked about McDaniel’s performance. He did not elaborate.

Social media lit up with reactions to the news of McDaniel’s impending resignation.
