DEVELOPING: Indiana BP Refinery Experiences Power Outage, Prompts Evacuations

A power outage at an Indiana BP oil refinery has led to an emergency evacuation.

According to ABC 7, the outage caused “increased burning and flaring through the stacks at the site.”

BP reportedly said the flaring is to burn off excess product during the power outage.

“The outage has prompted employees to evacuate of the refinery, with heavy flare activity observed. Reports indicate multiple streets near the refinery have been shut down. Officials state that this restoration process could take several hours. Additional smoke and flames are expected as a precautionary measure to burn off products smoke and flames can be seen miles away,” Rawsalerts wrote.

BP is working to resolved the power outage, the city of Whiting said in a release.

“Out of an abundance of caution, BP has evacuated the employees from the Glass House located on Indianapolis Boulevard and 129th Street. No further evacuation is required,” the release read in part. “We have also been notified that Indianapolis Boulevard from 129th to Schrage will be closed to all traffic.”

CBS Chicago shared this footage:

BP’s Whiting refinery experienced a leak last week, causing a natural gas smell in nearby suburbs.

From CBS News:

A leak was to blame for the mysterious smell in the south suburbs.

On Wednesday, the Village of Tinley Park reported their 911 centers received calls for a natural gas odor outside. Suburbs east of Tinley Park were also getting reports.

A spokesperson for BP’s refinery in Whiting said it experienced a leak from a storage tank in the fields last week. The leak was stopped and contained at the tank confinement area as of last Friday.

The refinery was operating normally this week, and no injuries were reported.

Still, some residents in Whiting said they’d experienced headaches because of the sulfur-like smell. Some residents who live right across the street from the refinery said the smell seeped into their homes.

“The closer you get to the refinery, you can, there’s something. There’s a difference,” said resident Albert Zieba.

Whiting Mayor Steve Spebar described the odor as “a combination … of sulfur and fuel.”

Zieba said, “It’s not going to knock your socks off, but you don’t want to live in it.”

A BP spokesperson said it’s been using stationary and mobile air monitoring equipment and will continue to do so until contaminated soil and gravel in the containment area is removed.

I've been here to cover each of these, but it's really jarring when you see it all in one place.
