Maricet Espinoa Gonzalez, a former Judo champion and Olympian has tragically passed away from a heart attack during surgery.

The Olympian was allegedly undergoing a breast enlargement operation when they unfortunately suffered a heart attack.

Maricet was an accomplished athlete, winning many different Judo championships.

Judo champion and Olympian Maricet Espinoa Gonzalez has tragically died after apparently suffering a heart attack … just days after she reportedly went under the knife.

Gonzalez was a 2x Pan American Judo champion, winning gold in 2013 and 2014. She also competed in the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio.

The Cuban Sports University broke the news, announcing “La Mole” passed away this week.

“With great pain, the university community of Cuban sport receives the news of the passing of the outstanding Cuban judoka Maricet Espinosa González,” the university said on Facebook.

It seems all too common for young athletes to pass away today.

While there, she defeated Nepal’s Phupu Lhamu Khatri in the first round of the women’s 63kg competition.

However, Gonzalez lost in the next round to Israel’s Yarden Gerbi, her most frequent opponent during her career.

She also won two silver medals at the continental judo Championships in 2016.

The news of Gonzalez’s death came after the Manuel Fajardo Cuban Sports University made a post on Facebook on Monday.

They wrote: ‘Cuban judo is in mourning. Maricet Espinosa González passed away. With great pain, the university community of Cuban sports receives the news of the death of the outstanding Cuban judoka.
