Guitarist Johnny Marr has taken to X to express his objection to President Trump using music by The Smiths at his rallies.
The initial reaction came as a user on X posted the music being played at the rally.
See the initial post here:
You actually hear the Smiths more often than you'd think at 2024 Trump rallies

Here is Johnny Marr’s response:
Ahh…right…OK. I never in a million years would’ve thought this could come to pass. Consider this shit shut right down right now. https://t.co/M6eYROedOy

The folks at Fox News share more on the story:
Guitarist Johnny Marr of the rock band The Smiths is strongly objecting to its music being played at former President Trump’s campaign events.
ADVERTISEMENTFootage went viral of The Smiths’ hit song “Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want” from 1984 being played at a Trump rally in South Dakota last year.
The confrontation began when reporter Ben Jacobs wrote on Monday night, “As Trump is scheduled to take the stage in Laconia, the new addition to his pre rally music is The Smiths.”
ABC reporter Soorin Kim responded with footage from last September and wrote, “You actually hear the Smiths more often than you’d think at 2024 Trump rallies.”
Marr shared the post and wrote, “Ahh…right…OK. I never in a million years would’ve thought this could come to pass. Consider this s–t shut right down right now.”
Unfortunately for Johnny Marr, he doesn’t speak for the whole band.
The lead singer of The Smiths, Steven Morrissey, came under fire by liberals for his views attacking cancel culture.
Heaven knows libs are miserable now, as The Smiths played at Trump rally
This almost ‘trumps’ when Morrissey came out as a proud Brexiteer! 😂🇺🇸🇬🇧

The folks at Fox News wrote a great piece on that story back in 2022:
Music icon Steven Patrick Morrissey raged against cancel culture in a new interview, where he called the push for diversity is really a push for ‘conformity.’
ADVERTISEMENTSam Esty Rayner Photography released an interview with Morrissey earlier this week, where he warned about how music industry labels are now far quicker to abandon their artists in 2022 than they were in past decades.
“People could make five flops and the label would stick by them, now the labels are quite bloodless, they will just get rid of you if you say anything that they don’t agree with, they’re not interested,” Morrissey said at the London Palladium during his U.K tour. “Now they talk about ‘oh we must have diversity diversity diversity,’ diversity is people that you don’t know and it’s just another word for conformity, it’s the new way of saying conformity.”
He added that diversity as a concept has completely lost touch with its original meaning of taking joy in something precisely because it is unique.
It seems that Johnny Mar can cry all he wants, but as long as President Trump or the RNC pays for the rights to play the music, they can do it as much as they like!
