Early this morning, New York residents living in Manhattan and Queens reported a series of explosions that were powerful enough to shake buildings.
The explosions appeared to have been coming from underground on Roosevelt Island.
These “booms and shakes” were accompanied by widespread power outages and maintenance hole fires.
FDNY initiated an emergency response, and helicopters circled the area to monitor developments.

Reportedly, the explosions were set off by a small magnitude 1.7 earthquake:

Luckily, there have been no injuries reported. The situation has been declared under control.
Newsweek has more details on this developing story:
The cause of small explosions and tremors on New York City’s Roosevelt Island remains “unfounded,” a spokesperson for the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) tells Newsweek.
ADVERTISEMENTCalls came into the department shortly before 6 a.m. on Tuesday from residents on the Upper East Side of Manhattan and Astoria, Queens, reporting what they said were explosions causing a building to shake. It was believed to be activity coming from the 500 block of Main Street, south of the Roosevelt Island Tramway.
Numerous FDNY units showed up to investigate. Gas and electric utility Con Edison was also called to the scene. EMS personnel on the scene said that FDNY crews were investigating “multiple maintenance hole fires.”
“It was very loud,” one Roosevelt Island resident told The Daily Mail. “The walls shook, and you could hear my windows rattling.” An Astoria resident also told the outlet that the explosion was so fierce it felt like “a truck had plowed into our building.”
“Loud booms and a shake,” the person said. “We’re still trying to chill from that. Scary stuff.”
New York Daily News also reported on the likely cause of the explosions:
An earthquake rattled parts of Queens Tuesday morning and may have sparked a series of underground explosions reported on Roosevelt Island, city officials said.
“The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reports that a 1.7 magnitude earthquake has occurred near Astoria, Queens,” Notify NYC reported. “The earthquake has reportedly been felt in the New York City area, but there are no reports of injuries or damage in New York City at this time.”
Residents of both Manhattan and Queens reported hearing multiple explosions just before 6 a.m. centered Main St. in Roosevelt Island just south of the Roosevelt Island Bridge to Queens. Callers reported that at least one building near the explosion shook, an FDNY spokesman said.
ADVERTISEMENTFirefighters arrived and found no flames and no one injured. The explosion, which may be electrical, appeared to have occurred underground.
