Censure Resolution Passes – Radical Rashida Tlaib Condemned By Peers

Representative Rashida Tlaib was officially censured by a majority of the House of Representatives on November 7th.

212 Republicans and 22 Democrats voted to have Rep. Tlaib censured.

The censure, initially introduced by Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, was meant to condemn the radical anti-Semitic language used by Rep. Tlaib.

Read the Tweet that landed her in hot water:

Though Rep. Tlaib claims the phrase from the river to the sea is a positive message, the actual meaning represents the destruction of Israel.

The phrase refers to the erasure of Israel from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea.

The House of Representatives has voted to censure Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., in a 234 – 188 vote on Tuesday night.

The punishment, while largely symbolic, was a formal public rebuke of her most recent anti-Israel comments made in the wake of the Jewish nation’s war against terror group Hamas.

Twenty-two Democrats voted with 212 Republicans to censure Tlaib. Four GOP lawmakers voted against the measure. Four lawmakers voted present. The measure was introduced by freshman Rep. Rich McCormick, R-Ga., on Monday.

“If this is not worthy of censure, what is? When you can call for the annihilation of a country and its people, if that’s not worthy of a censure, what is?” McCormick said on the House floor Tuesday.

In the text of his resolution, the Georgia Republican accused Tlaib of “promoting false narratives regarding the October 7, 2023, Hamas attack on Israel and for calling for the destruction of the state of Israel.”

A censure is more of a symbolic gesture; it does not expel or remove Rep. Tlaib from office, unfortunately.

However, this is an excellent step in combating the rise of anti-Semitism that is growing throughout the country.

Despite the censure, Rep. Tlaib refuses to back down from her radical position:

How grotesque to think that an elected official would fail to condemn the actions of Hamas and promote extremely problematic language.

ABC News shares more on what a censure resolution is:

A vote to censure a member of Congress does not hold power beyond a public condemnation of the member’s behavior. It does not deny privileges in Congress or expel the member. A simple majority is all that is needed for a censure resolution to pass.

Censures are relatively rare — only 25 House lawmakers had been censured in history.. Tlaib becomes the 26th.

Tuesday’s vote was the second attempt in as many weeks looking to condemn Tlaib, the first Palestinian-American member of Congress, for her controversial comments about Israel amid its response to the deadly Hamas terror attack. The U.S. has designated Hamas a terrorist organization.

In Israel, at least 1,400 people have been killed and 6,900 others have been injured since the surprise attack on Oct. 7, according to Israeli officials. In the neighboring Gaza Strip, where Israel Defense Forces are deepening its operational activities, more than 10,000 people have been killed and nearly 26,000 have been injured, according to the Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry.
