Democrat Jamaal Bowman Criminally Charged For Pulling Fire Alarm In Capitol Hill

Democrat Rep. Jamaal Bowman has been criminally charged after pulling a fire alarm on Capitol Hill.

Rep. Bowman feigned ignorance, claiming he did not know that pulling the fire alarm would set off the alarm.

Don’t worry, I’m rolling my eyes too.

Conveniently, Bowman happened to pull the fire alarm right as Republicans were deciding what to do about government spending on Sept. 30th.

More on the story from Fox News:

An arrest warrant filed by U.S. Capitol Police Supervisory Special Agent Joseph McAtee states that they were notified at 12:05 p.m. that a fire alarm had been pulled inside the Cannon House Office Building on the second floor.

When Bowman was interviewed by Capitol Police agents, he told them that he responded “yes” when asked if he knew anything about the fire alarm. The Democratic representative said he was in a rush because votes were being called, adding that the door is usually open.

Bowman, according to the arrest warrant, the agents that he saw the nearby doors with a sign reading “emergency exit only push to open,” so he pushed on the door and pulled the lever next to it, which must have been the alarm.”

“[Bowman] advised that usually when votes are called, all doors are open, and that door is usually open (the second floor door leading to Independence Ave). The defendant further stated that this door was a usual door he uses. The defendant advised that he then went to a Dem (Democratic) meeting and a vote at the Capitol, then the House Sergeant at Arms contacted him,” the warrant states.

Rep. Bowman was only charged with a misdemeanor for pulling the fire alarm.

Bowman is NOT being charged for disrupting Congress.

Some on X are calling out Rep. Bowman’s light sentencing.

NBC News has covered more on the story:

Bowman has been ordered to appear in D.C. Superior Court on Thursday morning for his arraignment, according to court documents.

His office did not immediately respond to a request for comment Wednesday afternoon.

The charge comes after the alarm was set off Sept. 30 in the Cannon office building as Republican lawmakers sought to kickoff a vote on a spending measure to keep the government open.

A spokesperson for U.S. Capitol Police spokesperson said in a statement at the time that after the alarm was activated around noon, the building was evacuated and later reopened after no threat was identified, and that police would conduct an investigation.

I’m sure it was all just a coincidence!

Don’t worry, everyone.

On the bright side, Rep. Bowman must go to the police station and have their mugshot taken.
