Beloved Olympic gold gymnast Mary Lou Reston is currently “fighting for her life” in the ICU.
Retton, 55, has been in the ICU for over a week after she was diagnosed with a rare form of pneumonia.
Her daughter in a statement shared ““My amazing mom, Mary Lou, has a very rare form of pneumonia and is fighting for her life.”
Retton at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles was fan favorite when she won a gold medal in the individual all-around competition and also snagged two silver medals along with two bronze medals.

Olympic gold medalist and legendary U.S. gymnast Mary Lou Retton is “fighting for her life” in an intensive care unit battling a rare form of pneumonia, according to a spotfund account set up by her daughter, McKenna Kelley.

She did not provide further details out of respect for her mother’s privacy, but did mention that Retton was uninsured. Kelley ended the post by asking for prayer.
Retton, 55, is one of the greatest gymnasts in American history and made her biggest mark on the sport during the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.

Former Olympic gymnastics champion Mary Lou Retton entered intensive care for pneumonia at a Texas hospital last week, her daughter has confirmed.
McKenna Kelley confirmed her mother’s condition on Tuesday, saying she is “fighting for her life” and unable to breathe without external aid. Retton does not have medical insurance and her family has since launched a fundraising campaign to alleviate the costs of her care.
“Hey everyone! On behalf of my sisters and I, we need y’all’s help. My amazing mom, Mary Lou, has a very rare form of pneumonia and is fighting for her life,” Kelley wrote. “She is not able to breathe on her own. She’s been in the ICU for over a week now. Out of respect for her and her privacy, I will not disclose all details. However, I will disclose that she not insured.”
