On Wednesday longtime Senator of Utah Mitt Romney announced he will not run for re-election but will instead retire.
Romney’s sudden retirement announcement garnered an immediate response from president Trump.
Trump took to Truth Social and wrote “FANTASTIC NEWS FOR AMERICA,THE GREAT STATE OF UTAH, & FOR THE REPUBLICAN PARTY. MITT ROMNEY, SOMETIMES REFERRED TO AS PIERRE DELECTO, WILL NOT BE SEEKING A SECOND TERM IN THE U.S. SENATE, WHERE HE DID NOT SERVE WITH DISTINCTION.”
Trump continued in all caps “A BIG PRIMARY FIGHT AGAINST HIM WAS IN THE OFFING, BUT NOW THAT WILL NOT BE NECESSARY. CONGRATS TO ALL. MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”

Politico explained what Trump meant when he called Romney Pierre Delecto.
Here’s what Politico reported:
President Donald Trump took to Truth Social on Wednesday to gloat after Sen. Mitt Romney announced that he would not run for reelection.
In his post, written in all-caps, Trump called the announcement “fantastic news for America, the great state of Utah, and for the Republican Party.” Trump also referenced Romney (R-Utah) as “Pierre Delecto,” an alias Romney formerly used on X, then Twitter, to like tweets criticizing Trump, among other content.
The two Republicans have long had an adversarial relationship. Romney’s moderate approach to legislating and openness to bipartisanship has frequently acted as a check on Trumpism, angering Trump and his supporters.
During Trump’s first impeachment trial, Romney was the only Republican senator who voted to convict Trump. The second time around, he was joined by six of his colleagues.
Trump made his thoughts on Romney’s Senate tenure clear in his post, writing that “he did not serve with distinction” and predicting that Romney would have faced a primary challenge had he decided to run again.

The Hill got the scoop too:
President Trump celebrated Sen. Mitt Romney’s (R-Utah) decision Wednesday not to seek another term, calling his frequent critic’s retirement “fantastic news” for Utah and the Republican Party.
“Mitt Romney, sometimes referred to as Pierre Delecto, will not be seeking a second term in the U.S. Senate, where he did not serve with distinction,” Trump wrote in all caps on Truth Social, referencing the pseudonym Romney used for a private Twitter account.
“A big primary fight against him was in the offing, but now that will not be necessary. Congrats to all. Make America great again!” Trump wrote.
ADVERTISEMENTRomney, who is 76, announced Wednesday he will retire from the Senate at the end of his term in 2024.
“I have spent my last 25 years in public service of one kind or another. At the end of another term, I’d be in my mid-eighties,” Romney said in a press release. “Frankly, it’s time for a new generation of leaders. They’re the ones that need to make the decisions that will shape the world they will be living in.”
