The news emerging from Maui at the moment reveals that residents attempting to flee the fires were prevented from escaping by local officials.
Reports indicate that the sole road out of Lahaina was rendered impassable due to downed powerlines and barricades.
Tragically, this led to the unfortunate outcome where many individuals who followed the instructions to stay in their cars lost their lives, while those who defied the orders survived.
The AP provided the following account of the harrowing events that transpired that day:
As flames tore through a West Maui neighborhood, car after car of fleeing residents headed for the only paved road out of town in a desperate race for safety.
And car after car was turned back toward the rapidly spreading wildfire by a barricade blocking access to Highway 30.
ADVERTISEMENTOne family swerved around the barricade and was safe in a nearby town 48 minutes later, another drove their 4-wheel-drive car down a dirt road to escape. One man took an dirt road uphill, climbing above the fire and watching as Lahaina burned. He later picked his way through the flames, smoke and rubble to pull survivors to safety.
But dozens of others found themselves caught in a hellscape, their cars jammed together on a narrow road, surrounded by flames on three sides and the rocky ocean waves on the fourth. Some died in their cars, while others tried to run for safety.
Twitter (X) users posted videos reportedly taken at the scene during the escape from the inferno.
This person was in a car on the road. *Language warning.

The survivor filming this next video was treading water and watching the cars and landscape burn.
gm web3 – but not a gm for the people of Hawai’i.
I woke up to learn that wildfires fueled by hurricane winds have decimated Maui. When it’s over Lahaina will have likely burned to the ground. 😭
Residents are fleeing, by car and into the water in some cases.

A reporter with a drone took these images after the fire. It’s pure devastation.
Stunning and haunting are the words used to describe the scene.
I don’t want to feed ridiculous conspiracies but all I can do is tell you the truth. I just spoke to a videographer from Lahaina. Davin Phelps. He’s a licensed drone pilot. He’s been flying over Lahaina for the past week. And he has stunning and haunting images of Lahaina. pic.twitter.com/zPNa6JEVt0

There remain a lot of questions about the fire, its origin, the local government’s actions during the emergency and after, and the Biden regime’s bungling response.

“Not a Joke”: Biden Says the Maui Fires Are like the Lightning That Almost Killed His Cat
A very basic question about this disaster is why on earth anyone would ever block an exit during an emergency rescue?
Like many other decisions made during the Maui fire, it doesn’t make sense.
